MEK supporters to rally outside UN as Iran undergoes Universal Periodic Review

MEK supporters to rally outside UN as Iran undergoes Universal Periodic Review

Supporters of the main Iranian opposition group People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), otherwise known as the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), plan to rally outside the United Nations headquarters in Geneva later this week, as the UN Human Rights Council holds its Universal Periodic Review into the human rights situation in Iran.

The protest by the Iranian MEK supporters will take place on Friday, November 8, 2019 outside the Palais des Nations.

The Iranian government and Judiciary are currently being run by mass murderers.

Iran’s Judiciary Chief, Ebrahim Raisi, was previously a member of the notorious Death Commissions that sent some 30,000 political prisoners to their death during the 1988 massacre. The vast majority of the victims were members of the MEK. They were executed following a fatwa against the MEK by the Iranian regime’s Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini.

The protesters will say that for as long as the criminals responsible for the 1988 massacre enjoy impunity in Iran, the regime will continue its brutal crackdown on any form of dissent.

The Iranian regime’s human rights record will be examined by the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group for the third time on Friday.

Iran is one of the 14 States to be reviewed by the UPR Working Group during its upcoming session taking place from November 4 to 15. Iran’s first and second UPR reviews took place in February 2010 and October 2014, respectively.

The documents on which the reviews are based are: 1) national report – information provided by the State under review; 2) information contained in the reports of independent human rights experts and groups, known as the Special Procedures, human rights treaty bodies, and other UN entities; 3) information provided by other stakeholders including national human rights institutions, regional organizations, and civil society groups.
