Resolution introduced to the Portuguese Parliament on November 29 condemning the suppression of Iran protests by the mullahs and was approved by a majority of 210 lawmakers.

The Portuguese parliament has 230 lawmakers. Of those, 210 voted in favor, two abstained and 18 MPs voted against.

The following is the text of the Portuguese Parliament’s statement in support of the Iran protests.

VOTE OF CONDEMNATION AND REGRET No. 62 / XIV  

Regarding the deaths in the demonstrations in Iran  

The Iranian population began, on November 15, a wave of demonstrations and protests. Protests against the 50% rise in fuel prices began in the capital and spread to several cities in Iran.  

According to international organizations, such as Amnesty International, at least 106 people were killed in clashes with security forces, however, it said in a statement that “The organization believes that the real death toll may be much higher, with some reports suggesting as many as 200 have been killed.” It also noted that recent events “reveal a harrowing pattern of unlawful killings by Iranian security forces, which have used excessive and lethal force to crush largely peaceful protests.” 

There are also several reports of gunshots from security forces on rooftops of buildings and, in one case, from a helicopter.  

Accordingly, the Assembly of the Republic decides: 

1. To show its regret for the people killed in the clashes in recent weeks in Iran; 

2. To condemn the excesses committed in the repression to stop the protests and demonstrations.

Background: Acording to reports by the network of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), also known as the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), inside Iran indicate demonstrations have taken place in more than 189 cities. More than 1,000 protesters have been killed, 4,000 wounded and 12,000 arrested during the Iran protests.

Mrs. Meireles was part of a delegation from Portugal’s Parliament to the the annual Free Iran conference in Ashraf 3 in Albania, home to members of the MEK, in July 2019.
