Cuneo, Italy, City Council Denounces Iran’s Use of the Death Penalty

On November 27, 2024, the City Council of Cuneo, Italy, unanimously passed a resolution condemning the use of the death penalty in Iran. The measure, supported by diverse political groups, draws attention to the alarming rise in executions within the country, with over 850 reported in 2023. The council underscored the Iranian regime’s continued violent repression, targeting women, children, and political dissidents.

The resolution highlighted the sharp increase in executions under Iran’s current leadership, including the targeted killings of political prisoners, dissidents, and activists—many of whom were detained during the 2022 protests.

Known for its longstanding support of the Iranian Resistance, Cuneo reaffirmed its solidarity with the Iranian people in their fight for justice and freedom. The council pledged to oppose the death penalty worldwide while backing efforts to end its practice in Iran.

The resolution calls for the abolition of capital punishment in Iran and condemns the regime’s persistent human rights abuses. It urges the international community to take decisive action against these violations and support initiatives to hold Iranian authorities accountable.
