Irish Lawmakers Urge Global Support for Democratic Change in Iran

Irish Lawmakers Call for International Support for Democratic Iran

Irish Lawmakers Urge International Support for a Democratic Future in Iran

A substantial group of Irish parliamentarians from both Seanad Éireann and Dáil Éireann have released a joint declaration voicing serious alarm over the deepening human rights crisis in Iran. In their statement, they advocate for global recognition of the Iranian people’s right to seek democratic change and express support for the organized opposition’s platform as a credible path toward a free Iran.

The declaration draws attention to Iran’s deteriorating human rights conditions, noting that more than 1,000 executions were recorded in 2024 alone. It strongly criticizes the regime’s enforcement of the so-called “Hijab and Chastity Law,” describing it as a mechanism for forced veiling, suppression of protesting women, and prevention of future demonstrations. The statement also condemns the death sentences handed down in late 2024 to nine political prisoners accused of being affiliated with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), underscoring what the Irish lawmakers describe as Tehran’s fear of an organized resistance.

A Crumbling Regime and the Case for Democratic Change

According to the statement, regional shifts—such as the collapse of Hezbollah’s influence and the fall of Syria’s dictatorship—have dealt significant blows to the Iranian regime’s strategy for survival. The signatories argue that continuing to appease this faltering regime betrays the core principles of democracy, fuels internal repression, and poses a broader risk to global security due to the regime’s nuclear ambitions and support for terrorism.

They highlight that during the 2022 uprising, the Iranian people decisively rejected both monarchical and theocratic rule, instead calling for a secular, democratic republic. With political avenues inside the country entirely shut off, the Irish lawmakers urge the international community to affirm the Iranian people’s right to regime change. They also emphasize the legitimacy of the MEK Resistance Units.’ efforts to challenge the regime and call for the formal designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

A Democratic Vision with Global Backing

The Irish parliamentarians express strong support for the Iranian opposition’s democratic agenda, as laid out in the Ten-Point Plan of Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). This plan outlines a comprehensive vision for a secular and democratic Iran—one free from forced veiling, religious compulsion, executions, and authoritarian rule. It also aligns with the popular slogans echoed throughout Iranian protests: “No to compulsory hijab,” “No to compulsory religion,” “No to dictatorship,” and “No to executions.”

The statement notes that this democratic alternative enjoys widespread global endorsement. As of June 2024, over 4,000 lawmakers and 100 former world leaders had expressed their support for the plan. The Irish signatories urge all democratic governments and international institutions to stand with the Iranian people by endorsing this vision for lasting peace and democratic governance.
