Maltese Parliamentarians Champion Iranian People’s Fight for Democracy and Urge Global Recognition of Resistance
A significant majority of members of the Maltese Parliament have united to express deep concern over the escalating human rights violations in Iran and to advocate for the international community’s support of the Iranian people’s right to democratic regime change. Their joint declaration underscores the intensifying repression by Iran’s ruling regime and strongly endorses a future based on democratic principles.
Malta’s parliamentary majority voices firm solidarity with Iran’s pro-democracy movement. A decisive call for liberty, justice, and a secular republic in place of religious dictatorship.

According to the statement, the Iranian regime has already executed over 1,000 individuals in 2024 alone. It specifically denounces the “Hijab and Chastity Law,” describing it as an instrument of widespread state control rather than merely a mandate for hijab enforcement. The law is seen as emblematic of the regime’s broader efforts to suppress civil liberties and impose ideological uniformity.
In stark contrast, the Iranian democratic opposition promotes a platform centered around fundamental freedoms: “No to compulsory hijab, no to compulsory religion, no to compulsory rule”—alongside its prominent “No to executions” campaign.
Adding to the urgency, the statement condemns the death sentences handed down to nine political prisoners in late 2024 for their alleged affiliation with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Despite these repressive tactics, the parliamentarians argue, the Iranian regime has failed to suppress the nationwide protest movement and the activities of Resistance Units led by the PMOI.
At the #FreeIran2025 Conference, the Maltese delegation affirmed support for the Iranian people and NCRI.
A majority of Malta’s Parliament, like UK MPs and Peers, backs Maryam Rajavi’s 10-point plan for a democratic, secular republic in Iran.

Regime Vulnerability and the Need for a Unified Global Response
The declaration also addresses the weakening pillars of Iran’s regional strategy. With Hezbollah’s waning influence and the fall of the Syrian regime’s stronghold, Iran’s regional dominance is clearly faltering. The parliamentarians point to Syria as a cautionary tale, emphasizing that oppressive regimes like those in Tehran and Damascus are more vulnerable than their propaganda suggests.
They warn that continued international appeasement of the Iranian regime not only contradicts democratic principles but also poses significant geopolitical and economic risks. Instead, the parliamentarians call for recognition of the Iranian people’s right to resist tyranny and for designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
Supporting Iran’s democratic movement, they argue, is not only a sound policy choice but a moral responsibility. Any serious strategy on Iran must center the voices of its people and their organized resistance.

A Democratic Blueprint: The Opposition’s Vision for Iran
Reflecting on the 2022 nationwide uprising, the statement emphasizes that the Iranian people have unequivocally rejected all forms of dictatorship—both monarchical and theocratic—in favor of a democratic republic. This sentiment was powerfully echoed in the widespread boycott of the regime’s 2022 presidential election.
The organized Iranian opposition, led by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, presents a credible democratic alternative through her Ten-Point Plan. This platform promotes gender equality, separation of religion and state, and a transfer of power to the people’s elected representatives. It serves as a roadmap for national solidarity and a peaceful transition away from religious dictatorship.
In June 2024, more than 4,000 legislators worldwide, alongside 100 former heads of state and government, publicly endorsed this plan. The Maltese parliamentarians now urge the global community to join them in supporting this democratic vision for Iran.
