Italian Senators Rally Behind Iranian Resistance, Demand Stronger EU Action Against Tehran Regime
A broad majority in the Italian Senate has publicly voiced support for the Iranian people’s fight for democracy, condemning the clerical regime’s increasing repression and mass executions—particularly of political prisoners. In a unified declaration, senators criticized the execution of over 1,200 individuals within ten months under President Pezeshkian, highlighting the systematic targeting of members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Notably, nine PMOI-affiliated political prisoners were handed death sentences in the final months of 2024 alone.
The statement, backed by a cross-party alliance that includes current and former ministers, Senate leaders, and numerous vice-chairs, strongly denounces the regime’s use of arbitrary arrests, torture, and politically motivated executions as tools to crush dissent. The senators stress that supporting the Iranian people’s demand for regime change is both a just and necessary policy.
Crucially, the Senate majority endorses the Ten-Point Plan proposed by Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). The plan envisions a secular, democratic, and non-nuclear Iran committed to gender equality, human rights, and the abolition of the death penalty. The senators urge democratic nations to adopt clear and firm policies in solidarity with the Iranian people, asserting that such measures are vital for long-term peace and security in the region.
Among the key recommendations outlined in the statement are:
-
A strong condemnation of the sharp rise in executions, particularly of political prisoners.
-
Full support for Maryam Rajavi’s democratic vision for a future Iran.
-
The immediate designation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization within Europe.
-
The closure of Iranian regime embassies accused of involvement in terrorism and suppression abroad.
The declaration concludes by calling for robust international action, emphasizing that the path to lasting regional stability must prioritize the Iranian people, their organized resistance, and their quest for a democratic future.
