EU Lawmakers Urge Official Recognition of the Iranian People’s Democratic Struggle

Conference in the European Parliament on International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2025
Conference in the European Parliament on International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2025

MEPs Call for a Principled EU Policy Toward Iran

European lawmakers, former prime ministers, senior parliamentary leaders, and human rights advocates called for a decisive shift in the EU’s Iran policy—one that recognizes the Iranian people’s right to resist and overthrow religious dictatorship.

In her keynote address, NCRI President-elect Mrs. Maryam Rajavi warned that Iran has reached an “exceptional moment,” with the regime facing collapsing legitimacy, intensifying repression, economic failure, regional isolation, and the rapid expansion of the Resistance.
She urged Europe to end its silence, blacklist the IRGC, and refer Tehran’s human rights crimes to the UN Security Council.

Condemnation of Executions and Repression

Speakers condemned the spike in executions, targeting of women and youth, and the persecution of political prisoners—including 18 Resistance supporters on death row.
They stressed the failure of appeasement, the strategic role of PMOI Resistance Units, and the global stakes of Iran’s struggle between autocracy and democracy.
Repeated calls were made for Europe to recognize the NCRI and Mrs. Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan as a democratic alternative.

Statements by European Parliament Members

MEP Milan Zver

Zver called Iran one of the world’s most severe human rights and security crises, insisting that Europe must adopt a serious, principled policy. Despite being blacklisted by the regime, many MEPs continue to support the democratic opposition.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi: The Iranian People’s Right to Overthrow Tyranny

Mrs. Rajavi urged Europe to recognize the Iranian people’s right to overthrow religious tyranny, saying the regime faces an existential crisis.
She described the collapse of Tehran’s regional “Axis of Resistance,” economic breakdown, and consistent nationwide protests as signs that the rulers lack any capacity for reform.

She reiterated that the greatest threat to the regime is the growing network of PMOI Resistance Units, which are preparing the ground for an organized uprising.

Mrs. Rajavi emphasized the failure of reformism, foreign intervention, and appeasement, reaffirming the NCRI’s Third Option:

  • Overthrow of the velayat-e faqih system by the people.

  • Rejection of both monarchy and theocracy.

  • Separation of religion and state.

She reaffirmed commitments to democracy, gender equality, autonomy for Iranian Kurdistan, abolition of the death penalty, and a non-nuclear Iran.
Mrs. Rajavi again urged the EU to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization and send Iran’s human rights dossier to the Security Council, stressing that Iran’s future is a democratic republic, not a monarchy or theocracy.

MEP Petras Auštrevičius

Auštrevičius warned that death sentences for 17 PMOI supporters reflect the regime’s attempt to repeat the atrocities of the 1980s. He called on the EU to support Mrs. Rajavi’s demand for a Security Council referral and to recognize her Ten-Point Plan as the only long-term democratic vision.

MEP Francisco Assis

Assis said recent executions indicate a “potential new massacre.” He urged the EU not to repeat its failure during the 1988 massacre, calling for suspension of diplomatic ties until executions halt and for recognition of Mrs. Rajavi’s democratic alternative.

MEP Leoluca Orlando

Orlando described the NCRI and PMOI as a uniquely enduring Resistance movement. He highlighted the leading role of women and emphasized that the only democratic path forward is the rejection of both monarchy and theocracy—echoing the principles championed by Mrs. Rajavi.

MEP Andrey Kovatchev

Kovatchev welcomed the UN’s acknowledgment of the 1988 massacre as a major step toward accountability. He condemned death sentences against Resistance supporters and supported Mrs. Rajavi’s call for a Security Council referral.

MEP Pekka Toveri

Toveri argued that expanding PMOI Resistance Units prove that unrest in Iran is structural, not spontaneous. He called Mrs. Rajavi’s Third Option the only credible policy and rejected any return to monarchy, insisting on a democratic, secular republic.

Former Belgian PM Guy Verhofstadt

Verhofstadt praised the courage of 18 political prisoners who reaffirmed their support for a democratic republic. He condemned more than 2,600 killings in sixteen months and said appeasement has failed.
He urged Europe to recognize the NCRI and Mrs. Rajavi as the legitimate voice of the Iranian people.

Former Italian PM Matteo Renzi

Renzi said the regime’s brutality—such as 46 prisoners killed in five days—reflects its weakness. After years of failed diplomacy, he concluded that the only viable path is to support the movement led by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi.

Former MEP Ryszard Czarnecki

Czarnecki noted the activities of Resistance Units as evidence that Iranians will not surrender. He condemned public hangings and expressed hope to see Mrs. Maryam Rajavi free in Tehran.

MEP Rasa Juknevičienė

Juknevičienė warned that Western democracies risk repeating past appeasement mistakes. She identified Iran, Russia, and North Korea as a new “Axis of Evil” and urged intensified support for movements like the NCRI—echoing Mrs. Rajavi’s message to act “before it’s too late.”

Former MEP Paulo Casaca

Casaca said the NCRI is now more united and determined than ever. He called for a global sanctions regime targeting all officials involved in executions, saying such pressure is vital to support the Iranian people “under the leadership of Mrs. Rajavi.”
He expressed confidence that Iran can once again embody the humanistic values represented by the Cyrus Cylinder.
