Resistance of Iranian women, best retort to religious fundamentalism<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is many years now that the resistance of Iranian women against the theocracy in Iran<\/a> has become a paradigm for many women, especially Muslim ones, worldwide. This resistance is not just against the religious dictatorship ruling Iran, but against the Islamic fundamentalist mindset that has brought suffering to many countries in the Middle East and beyond. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to focusing on the resistance of Iranian women, a\nlook at the barbarity of this dictatorship against women is warranted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oppression of this vulnerable half of the society aids and abets\nthe regime to suppress the whole of the Iranian society.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is 40 years now that the Islamic fundamentalism ruling Iran has placed enmity towards Iranian women<\/a> at the core of its atrocities. Oppression of this vulnerable half of the society aids and abets the regime to suppress the whole of the Iranian society. Regime\u2019s misogyny feeds on a medieval mindset that regards a \u2018woman\u2019 as an incomplete creation to be subservient to \u2018man\u2019 and to serve him as a slave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How has the regime treated Iranian women and thus the\nentire society in these 40 wretched years?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crimes perpetrated against and the hardship imposed\non the Iranian people is truly horrendous: From imprisonment, torture and\nexecution of dissidents to pre-sale of newborns; from homelessness to selling\nof girls to neighboring countries or forced marriage of teenage girls. Many\nrestrictions are imposed on women. They are not free to choose their clothing\nand favorite sports, and need consent from their guardian males to travel\nabroad. The available statistics and reports in the media paint a picture of\nthis living catastrophe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Women\u2019s Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a>, since Hassan Rouhani\u2019s presidency in 2013, eighty-seven women have been executed in Iran. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forced veiling has been amongst the main tools in\nsuppression of Iranian women since mullahs came to power in Iran with 26\ngovernment organs tasked to carry it out. Hassan Rouhani bragged that he was\nthe first official to impose mandatory hijab in the public sector where he\nordered any female employee not observing the dress code to be barred from\nentering the work place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rouhani has also supported barring women from certain\njobs. In August 2014, one year after Rouhani had come to power, a security\nforces official stated that women have been barred from working in coffee shops\nand restaurants along intercity roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of 2653 positions to manage cities, towns, townships\nand provinces, only 13 is occupied by women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Job scarcity for college-educated women has continued into\nRouhani\u2019s government. While 60% of those taking admission tests to universities\nare women, a large percentage cannot find any job once they graduate. ISNA\nstate news agency quoted Massoumeh Ebtekar, vice-president for Women and Family\nAffairs, on February 2019 that \u201cour statistics say that unemployed educated\nwomen are 2-3 times the number of their male counterparts\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resistance of Iranian\nwomen is an inspiration to Muslim women<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has been the reaction of Iranian women to this\npressure, oppression and discrimination?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The courageous resistance of Iranian women against\nmullahs\u2019 tyranny began with the assumption of power by Khomeini and his slogan\n\u201ceither wear a scarf or get beaten\u201d. This resistance has manifested itself\nduring all the years of dictatorial rule and we can see women at the forefront\nof protests in the past tumultuous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women partook in at least 850 protests in the past 9\nmonths. Female students at universities were also actively involved in at least\n300 student protests since last December where they voiced their \u2018NO\u2019 vote to\nthe fundamentalist rule in their country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have turned schools and universities, government buildings\nand streets to sites of protest and strike and have encouraged others to\nparticipate in anti-government protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their resistance to tyranny and refusal to succumb to\ncoercion is to be praised. And thus they are a beacon of hope and resistance for\nwomen against religious fundamentalism such as advocated by ISIS and other\nterrorist groups.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
