Iran regime\u2019s social media crisis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wide\nusage of the internet by the Iranians\nhas created a social media crisis for the\ndespotic regime in Iran. More than half of the 80 million Iranians, especially\nthe youth, use the internet encrypted\nmessaging applications, to\nshare news and information. This is the fact that has got the entire regime apparatus gravely concerned of\ngrowing dissent and the spread of unrest in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actually,\nsocial media crisis appeared to the regime after the huge anti-government\nprotests exploded after the disputed presidential election in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At\nthat time, many users saw the Internet as an easy way to get around regime\u2019s\ncensorship, as well as to challenge the government\u2019s narratives aiming at\nconcealing the brutality of the violent crackdown on the protesters. Since\nthen filtering of social media has turned into a weapon for the regime to\nconfront the flow of information that in many cases were calls for protest\ngatherings and uprisings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto the National\nCouncil of Resistance of Iran<\/a>, as the regime in Iran faces a variety of\ncrises, its deputy public prosecutor expresses concerns about cyberspace; as the\nsocial media crisis becomes extremely worrisome for Tehran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reporters\nWithout Borders<\/a> has\ndesignated Iran under the rule of mullahs among the \u201cenemies of the\ninternet\u201d states and more specifically, among the six top ones that\nactively block social media networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concerns\nover social media crisis and the lack of proper measures to cope with it (read\nsocial media censorship), has brought up the infighting inside the factions of\nIran\u2019s regime to the surface being reflected in the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trying\nto drag the attention to the scope of the crisis the regime is plunged in, Mohammad\nMontazeri, regime\u2019s attorney general put the blame on the Minister of\nCommunications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montazeri\nsaid, \u201cThe cyberspace issue is left without surveillance and brings shame to\nthe country. These damn networks of Telegram and Instagram, which are filled\nwith whatever people outside Iran want, are known to us all.\u201d He added: \u201cThe\nMinistry of Communications is responsible for the internet. Because they have\ntools to deal with such issues. I only act as the attorney general in this\nmatter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, Montazeri challenged the Communication\nMinister and said: \u201cI call on the Communication Minister to appear on TV along\nwith an expert that I will name to answer why they haven\u2019t done anything to\nlaunch the national intelligence network demanded by the supreme leader, and\nwhy they haven\u2019t implemented the Cyberspace Supreme Council\u2019s enactments.\u201d\u00a0 Montazeri insisted on internet censorship,\nand internet repression, describing such measures as the \u201cfight against\ninternet crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nsource of the <\/strong>regime\u2019s\nsocial media crisis <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To\nrealize the main source of the regime\u2019s concerns over the so-called internet\ncrimes, it is worthy to point at some assertions of the regime\u2019s officials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nhead of the regime\u2019s police unit supervising the internet, known as FATA, in\nIsfahan, central Iran, complained about the role of the People\u2019s\nMojahedin Organization of Iran<\/a> (PMOI\/MEK) in exposing the regime\u2019s inaction\nduring the recent flood disaster in Iran on the internet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost of the news on the recent floods<\/a> were published by the PMOI\/MEK on the internet,\u201d He said. \u201cThe cyber war is the front line of today\u2019s wars\u2026 Most of the news about the recent floods were published on social media by this group\u2026\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nregime\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS<\/a>) announced an event has been\nheld in the city of Mashhad, northeast of Iran, to evaluate the PMOI\/MEK\u2019s\n\u201covert and covert role\u201d in today\u2019s social media platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kan\u2019ani\nMoghadam, a former senior IRGC member and the head of a regime\u2019s faction, expressed\nconcerns about the PMOI\/MEK\u2019s growing influence on the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\nhave infiltrated our apparatus inside the country, becoming very capable in\ngathering information,\u201d he said. \u201cThe PMOI\/MEK is monitoring all of our\nactivities,\u201d he complained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These\nconcerns can also be heard in the regime\u2019s Majlis (parliament).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u201cAround 15 percent of the\n[Iranian regime dissidents] and the PMOI\/MEK inside the country are active on\nsocial media. They are spreading disappointing news about the Revolution and\nthe state, to influence public opinion,\u201d one Majlis member said on Sunday.\n\nTherefore,\nthe main reason for the regime\u2019s social media crisis is its viable\nalternative, the PMOI\/MEK that has a significant role in\ndirecting all popular protests and popular discontent towards regime change in\nIran.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
