The reason this Iranian\nopposition group has survived for so long is precisely because it has support\ninside Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Rubin\u2019s take-down of the main Iranian opposition group, the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK)<\/a> misses a critical point: The reason this Iranian opposition group has survived for so long is precisely because it has support inside Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider the evidence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Number one: In July 1988,\nAyatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was compelled\nto \u201cdrink the cup of poison\u201d and agree to a cease-fire with Iraq, after having\nsacrificed the lives of almost 1 million Iranians. Concerned about the\nvulnerability of his regime to public unrest, the Supreme Leader ordered the\ncold-blooded murder of 30,000 MEK members who were being held in regime\nprisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of four months, from June through September 1988<\/a>, the Iranian state was transformed into a vast killing machine\u2014executing thousands in a single day. In fact, Iran\u2019s current judiciary chief\u2014Ebrahim Raisi\u2014served on the \u201cdeath commission\u201d that sent many of these prisoners to the death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, as recently as twenty\nyears ago, the Iranian regime was sufficiently concerned about the MEK\u2019s power\ninside Iran to summarily execute 30,000 of its followers. That sure doesn\u2019t\nsound like a group that, as Mr. Rubin writes, is \u201cunable to win any support\nfrom Iranians inside Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Number two: Since\nDecember 2017, the government of Iran has been facing unprecedented waves of\nprotests throughout the country. Iranians from all classes, social backgrounds,\nage demographics from every one of the country\u2019s thirty-one provinces have been\nengaged in demonstrations against clerical rule. Students, merchants, truck\ndrivers, young and old, educated and illiterate have called for an end to the\nIranian revolution, which has brought them little beyond isolation, privation\nand corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Video evidence from\ninside Iran shows that many of these protestors are MEK supporters. They hang\npictures of Maryam Rajavi, the head of the MEK\u2019s parent organization, the\nNational Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) from highway overpasses. They\nparade with signs condemning the regime and endorsing the MEK in front of\nmosques and major squares in Tehran, Isfahan, Mashhad, Shiraz and even Qom, the\nseat of mullahs\u2019 power. These people are putting their lives on the line. They\nknow that if caught, they and their family members will be arrested, tortured\nand\u2014some at least\u2014probably executed. Yet despite the risk, they persist. These\nare not the actions of paid shills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Number three: If the MEK\nwere as feckless and toothless as Mr. Rubin contends, then why is the Iranian\nregime so obsessed with demonizing them? Surely, a group that has no support\nwithin Iran would not merit such attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, over the past\nseveral years, Iran\u2019s state-run media has produced a total of nineteen movies,\nseries, and documentaries\u2014some of them consisting of up to twenty-eight\nsegments of thirty to forty-five minutes each\u2014that demonize the MEK. In 2018\nalone, eighteen major books were published by the regime against the MEK.\nIran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei excoriated the MEK by name at least four\ntimes. Iran\u2019s President Hassan Rouhani has directly blamed the MEK for organizing\npublic protests. In January 2018, when the protests in Iran were at their\nheight, Rouhani personally phoned French president Emmanuel Macron and asked\nhim to limit the activities of the MEK in France. Macron refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logically, the Iranians clamoring\nfor change in the streets have allegiance to some alternative to the regime\nthey so despise. Michael Rubin asserts that during the seven months he spent in\nIran while completing his Ph.D. dissertation, \u201cMany Iranians asked about\nthe Diaspora, and especially the exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi. That did not\nmean they were monarchists, but decades of being under the Islamic Republic had\nleft them craving the past as a golden age.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then marshals a series\nof anecdotes and assertions in romanticizing about the make-believe world in\nwhich Iranians once again become subjects of the Pahlavi monarchy. He says that\none storekeeper asked: \u201cOh my shah, my shah, where is my shah?\u201d It is unclear\nif he is trying to be funny or just disingenuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To my knowledge, the\nregime has not spent a dime on demonizing the elderly remnants of the monarchy,\nbut it does pay journalists abroad to publish fake stories against the MEK. The\nhead of a major Canadian think tank revealed that the Iranian regime embassy\noffered him up to $80,000 to refer to the MEK as a \u201ccult\u201d in his\npublications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This unprecedented\ndemonization campaign tells me that the regime views the MEK (and only the MEK)\nas an existential threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Number four: Having\nfailed to stem the tide of popular anger with words, the government of Iran has\nresorted to its tried-and-true method of persuasion\u2014terrorism\u2014to silence the\nMEK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least three major terrorist plots coordinated by the regime against the MEK were uncovered in 2018 in the United States, Albania, and France. Iranian intelligence agents operating out of its embassy in Vienna were arrested for masterminding and participating in an attempted bombing of the group\u2019s Free Iran rally in Paris in 2018. Its agents in Albania and the United States have been implicated in plots to attack MEK officials operating legally in those countries. European governments expelled, extradited or arrested Iranian \u201cdiplomats\u201d from France, Germany, Belgium<\/a> and Albania in response to their use of official cover for purposes of terror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, while it is true\nthat the Trump administration has taken a more favorable view of the MEK as\ncompared to its predecessors, it is also worth pointing out that in 2004, the\nUnited States recognized the rights of the MEK as \u201cprotected persons under the\nFourth Geneva Convention,\u201d after an exhaustive sixteen-month investigation of\neach and every member of the MEK by seven different agencies of the U.S.\nGovernment. They concluded that \u201cthere was no basis to charge any member of the\ngroup [MEK] with the violation of American law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suffice it to say that\nthe MEK\u2019s base of support does not lie in Washington, Paris or any other\ncapital. It lies in the hearts and minds of the legions of Iranians who have\nand continue to be the target of the murderous policies of a ruthless and\nunrepentant Iranian regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
