More proof of cooperation between Iran, Al-Qaeda<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a common misconception that since Iran\u2019s\ntheocratic\u00a0establishment is Shiite, it will not cooperate with non-Shiite\nterrorist groups and militias.\u00a0For example, some policy analysts, scholars\nand politicians continue to promote the argument that Tehran and Al-Qaeda are\nnot natural allies due to their religious differences.\u00a0Analyses that view\nthe Iranian regime\u00a0solely\u00a0through\u00a0the prism of religion are\nextremely simplistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehran pursues a sectarian agenda in the region,\u00a0pitting\nShiite against Sunni in order to divide and conquer. But the sectarian division\nbetween Sunni terrorist groups and the Iranian regime was never an issue for\nthe latter\u00a0as long as these groups shared common strategic and\ngeopolitical interests with it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehran has always been willing to shake hands with terrorist\ngroups as long as they can help accomplish its revolutionary principles (such\nas anti-Americanism, anti-Semitism and opposition to Gulf states, primarily\nSaudi Arabia), destabilize the region and achieve its\u00a0hegemonic ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently,\u00a0a former spokesman for Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)<\/a>, Said Qasemi,\u00a0surprisingly\u00a0disclosed\u00a0that Tehran sent agents to\u00a0Bosnia and Herzegovina to train Al-Qaeda members. He added that Tehran\u2019s operatives were hiding their identity by acting as humanitarian workers for Iran\u2019s Red Crescent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, the IRGC was hit with sanctions as the US designated\nit a foreign terrorist organization.\u00a0\u201cThe IRGC actively participates in,\nfinances, and promotes terrorism as a tool of statecraft,\u201d said US President\nDonald Trump. \u201cThe IRGC is the Iranian government\u2019s primary means of directing\nand implementing its global terrorist campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intriguingly, Iranian official Hossein Allahkaram, who\nis\u00a0believed\u00a0to be one of the operatives sent to\u00a0Bosnia and\nHerzegovina, confirmed the accuracy of Qasemi\u2019s statement, saying: \u201cThere used\nto be an Al-Qaeda branch in Bosnia and Herzegovina \u2026 They were connected to us\nin a number of ways. Even though they were training within their own base, when\nthey engaged in weapons training they joined us in various activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehran most likely\ncontinues to support Al-Qaeda in Iraq and other countries, with the goal of\npushing out forces that are rivals to Iran.<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late 2017,\u00a0a trove of 470,000 documents released by the\nCIA\u00a0revealed\u00a0close ties between Tehran and Al-Qaeda. The late\nAl-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden advised his followers to revere Tehran,\nand\u00a0wrote\u00a0that Iran was the\u00a0\u201cmain artery for funds, personnel\nand communication\u201d for the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more sophisticated training, Al-Qaeda members traveled to Lebanon.\u00a0According\u00a0to the documents, Iran offered Al-Qaeda fighters\u00a0\u201cmoney and arms and everything they need, and offered them training in Hezbollah camps in Lebanon, in return for striking American interests in Saudi Arabia.\u201d Most likely, three Iranian institutions have been instrumental in helping Al-Qaeda: The IRGC, its elite Quds Force and the Intelligence Ministry. \u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran was also implicated\u00a0in the 9\/11 terrorist attacks.\nBefore the attacks, Tehran\u00a0allowed\u00a0Al-Qaeda operatives to cross\nthrough Iran without visas or passports. Robust evidence, including a US\nfederal court ruling,\u00a0found\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cIran furnished material and\ndirect support for the 9\/11 terrorists.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eight of the hijackers passed through Iran before coming to the\nUS. Tehran provided funds, logistical support and ammunition to Al-Qaeda\nleaders, and sheltered several of them, in exchange for attacks on US\ninterests.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehran most likely continues to support Al-Qaeda in Iraq and other\ncountries, with the goal of pushing out forces that are rivals to Iran. This\nalliance clearly explains why Al-Qaeda has never attacked Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Trump administration continues to\u00a0impose maximum\npressure on Iran, the latter may seek help from Al-Qaeda members in order to\nattack American bases, damage US national security interests, and scuttle the\nregional policy objectives of Washington and its allies.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
