Iranian regime cracks down on students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dissent in Iran is on the increase. Since the major protests that started in December 201<\/a>7, the people of Iran have made it very clear that they will not tolerate the regime\u2019s mismanagement any longer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protests\nand anti-government demonstrations have been continuing since then. There are\nregular strikes and the general discontent is obvious. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like in any situation like this, the young people are often the most outspoken, determined and courageous. Iran is no exception. Although the young people of Iran were not around for the Islamic Revolution, they have experienced the Iranian regime\u2019s<\/strong> repression for their whole lives. Unlike their parents and grandparents, they know of no other life in Iran. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students\nand other young people have been instrumental in organising protesting and\nspreading information despite the consequences that they face if caught. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\nnow the Iranian regime <\/strong>is putting regulations in place in order\nto stop students from displaying political behaviour. Regulations authorised by\nthe Supreme Cultural Revolution Council\u2019s Committee for the Islamization of\nUniversities of Iran give each university the authority to punish students with\nregards to their activities \u2013 even online activity that is peaceful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\nmeans that any students posting \u201cunethical\u201d photos or \u201ccommitting immoral acts\u201d\nonline will be subject to disciplinary action. However, the vagueness of the\nwording means that it gives the authorities the power to carry out even more\narrests. What the regime classes as \u201cunethical\u201d or \u201cimmoral\u201d is very different\nto what other countries would consider them to be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\nis expected that many students will now be targeted because of their manner of\ndressing or their hairstyles. They will also be targeted because of their\nsocial media use, including content that they share and subjects that they\ncomment on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once\nagain, the people of Iran are seeing their freedom and privacy curbed. People\nare prosecuted as and how the regime and authorities see fit. The justice\nsystem is riddled with corruption and the people of Iran are the innocent and\nlong-suffering consequences that have to bear the brunt of it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over\nthe past few years, more and more students have been arrested and thrown in\njail. Many of them have been tortured while incarcerated. Less than a year ago,\nstate-run news agencies were even reporting on the large numbers of students\nthat are being targeted by authorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\nis almost guaranteed that the brave students and young people of Iran are going\nto continue to fight for what they believe in \u2013 freedom, human rights,\ndemocracy and equality.
