Iran\u2019s 1988 Massacre<\/a>: Testimony by MEK witness Hengameh Haji Hassan, Ashraf 3, Albania, 15 July 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hello, dear audience and my dear sister Maryam<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Hengameh Haj Hassan. I was a nurse working at\nthe Sina Hospital in Tehran<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was arrested in 1982 for allegedly supporting the MEK<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Many of my colleagues were\narrested and many executed before me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of them, Ms. Fahimeh Mir Ahmadi, was an intern in the\nSina Hospital, she was pregnant when she was executed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our crime was curing patients who were injured by the\nIRGC guards and were brought to the hospital during demonstrations or on the\nstreets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was in Evin prison for a year and then transferred to\nGhezel Hesar prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the torture continued harshly, different kinds of\ntortures, from ordinary torture to enforced insomnia, coldness, no bathing, and\nhaving 30 people in a cell designed for 4 people, and a torture called the\ncoffin, residential units and cages. I was in the cage for 7 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0The cages were built with 2\nboards in the dimension of 60x160x70cm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0They had built these cages in a\nlot of rooms in Ghezel Hesar units and we weren\u2019t aware of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0They attacked our ward one day,\nand many of us were beaten and whipped and forced us to these cages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0They kept the prisoner in a cage,\nalways blindfolded and seated. You had no right to make noises or to speak.\nEven sneezing and coughing was prohibited. The room was so tight that when we\nmoved we hit the boards, and the boards fell on the other person beside, and\nright after it there was lashing and torture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was a few feet taller than others, so when sitting my\nhead showed. They hit my head and told me to lower my head so I had to bend\nmore. This has caused me such back problems that after five surgeries, I still\nhave problems. Also, my left eyesight has become deviated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a long time, after seven months, when we would see\neach other, we couldn\u2019t recognize one another, others too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They would torture us for any reason in the \u201ccage,\u201d although we had done\nnothing. For example, if the spoon hit our <\/p>\n\n\n\n

plate, they started torturing us under the pretext of\nattempting to make connections with other prisoners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were blindfolded so we couldn\u2019t realize when they would attack us, and\nsuddenly, when they hit us, we would hit <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the wall. Some even went unconscious when their heads would hit the wall\nand we didn\u2019t hear any voice. We could <\/p>\n\n\n\n

realize that they were unconscious. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davood Rahmani, the brutal chief warden of Ghezelhesar, told us, \u201cHere is\nthe final destination. We will kill you all and <\/p>\n\n\n\n

your voices will reach no place.\u201d They had already stopped\nour visits for months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our parents were looking for us for months in different prisons. They even\nwent to other provinces but couldn\u2019t find <\/p>\n\n\n\n

our traces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the \u201ccage,\u201d we were only given three minutes\nper day to go to the bathroom. We couldn\u2019t even brush our teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We didn\u2019t have such a chance. We couldn\u2019t bath for months. They wouldn\u2019t\ngive us food, and if they did, the food was <\/p>\n\n\n\n

scarce and very dirty, such as a\nwatery soup with bread or dirty rice filled with sand.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We didn\u2019t have a watch but we were allowed to go to sleep\nby midnight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a long day of sitting, when we wanted to sleep, they would\nturn on loudspeakers and play the regime\u2019s mourning songs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That would deprive us of sleep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although we were exhausted, after two or three hours they would wake us up\nand force us to squat. Being blind-folded, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

absolute constant silence and severe physical tortures\nreally unbalanced us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One would think they are stuck in a long dark tunnel\nwithout any end, and it seemed very difficult. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The torturers sought to break our\nwill and force us to surrender and betraying our cause. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I thought to myself that once again, like my\nfriends, I should remember the MEK cause and values. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thought of Tahmineh Rastegar Moghadam, a nurse who was arrested with me,\nand she accepted my accusation of <\/p>\n\n\n\n

having a MEK statement. She was executed to prevent my\nexecution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or my beloved friend, Shekar Mohammadzadeh, who was arrested in the surgery room\nwhile operating a patient and <\/p>\n\n\n\n

taken directly to the torture chamber. She was sentenced to 15 years behind\nbars. However, after seven years and <\/p>\n\n\n\n

going through various tortures in the \u201cResidential Units,\u201d the \u201cCage\u201d and the\n\u201cCoffin,\u201d she was finally executed in 1988 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

along with my other colleague Akram Bahador and thousands\nof other prisoners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was then that I decided to prepare myself for longer\ndays in the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knew this would not last long so I planned every second and every day. I\nstarted recalling those things I had learned in <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the MEK. Such as poetry, hymns, martyrs\u2019 biographies and political\nsubjects. I remembered them all and repeated them <\/p>\n\n\n\n

to myself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remembered my lessons in school and conferenced them\nfor myself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried to remember every song that I knew from my\nchildhood and memorized them again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had a workout plan twice a day, I couldn\u2019t move but I\ndid all the workouts in my head. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I missed my patients. Every day I went to the hospital in my mind and\nnursed them. To resist those loud mourning <\/p>\n\n\n\n

sounds that prevented us from sleeping, I decided to\nfocus much so I couldn\u2019t hear them and I succeeded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of hearing those sounds, I tried to remember those places that I\nhad visited with my friends. I imagined myself <\/p>\n\n\n\n

being there and that\u2019s how I could conquer those voices\nand go to sleep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the hardest time was when I was overwhelmed with loneliness. It was\nvery difficult for me, but I thought of God, of <\/p>\n\n\n\n

how close he is, and he would help me. I remembered Massoud Rajavi, to whom\nI promised that I would stand to the <\/p>\n\n\n\n

end and fight. This gave me strength. I talked to him and\nI didn\u2019t feel lonely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The torturers thought they could\nbreak our will through torture<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They didn\u2019t know that this works oppositely in the case of MEK supporters.\nAs much as we endured torture, we <\/p>\n\n\n\n

believed more in the righteousness of our cause and that\nwe have to continue, because this is the right thing to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I realized that others in the \u201cCage\u201d had reached the\nsame conclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although I was severely tortured and I still suffer from it, all of my\nfriends who were inside the \u201ccage\u201d were executed, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

with the exception of a small number. However, we always considered\nourselves as representatives of the MEK and <\/p>\n\n\n\n

were committed to support our cause and leader, because we owed it to him.\nHe led us to the most glorious and noble <\/p>\n\n\n\n

path while never asking for anything for himself. He only\nthought about the freedom for his people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, when we were released from prison, we rejoined the MEK and\nhave continued our struggle to this day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
