Scale of Iran protests and crackdown still not known<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world doesn\u2019t yet have full knowledge of the Iranian regime\u2019s crackdown on the ongoing nationwide protests because of the internet shutdown that targeted everyone bar government officials and state media outlets, but what little information has leaked should horrify us all, according to Homeira Hesami of the\u00a0Iranian-American\u00a0Community of North Texas<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hesami wrote<\/a> in The Dallas Morning News on Sunday that the regime has, in many cases, refused to return the bodies of the slain to their families, which is reminiscent of their actions during the 1988 massacre<\/a> of 30,000 political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She wrote that we should be alarmed over\n\u201cthe prospect that the perpetrators of the latest killings may never be\nheld accountable for their actions. After all, no one has ever been brought to\njustice for the 1988 massacre. In fact, many of the leading participants in\nthat massacre have been rewarded with progressively more powerful appointments\nin the Iranian government and state-linked private industries\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the reasons for this crackdown is that over the past 40 years<\/a>, the regime\u2019s crimes have largely been ignored by the West in favour of appeasement, so the mullahs believe they will face few consequences from the international community. Luckily, they will face consequences from the Iranian people and the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization <\/a>of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) who will overthrow them in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hesami explained that one of the reasons\nfor the internet shutdown was so that the regime could conceal the fact that\nthe Iranian people are on the brink of bringing down the mullahs. Why else\nwould the people continue to go out when at least 450 have died, 7000 have been\ninjured, and 10,000 have been arrested?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real question is not whether these\nprotests will see the end of the regime, but whether the international\ncommunity will ignore these crimes against humanity instead of condemning the\nregime, instituting sanctions, and sending fact-finding delegations that will\nall put pressure on the mullahs and weaken them so that the people can hasten\ntheir overthrow of the dictatorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hesami praised the White House, the State\nDepartment, and the UN Human Rights Council for condemning the excessive use of\nforce by Iranian authorities, but advised that these must be followed by\n\u201cconcrete measures to cut into the regime\u2019s sense of impunity\u201d and that human\nrights activists should push for more decisive action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She advised that the is bipartisan\ncondemnation of the killings and support for the uprising in Iran, including\nSenators Ted Cruz, Mitch McConnell, and Robert Menendez, as well as\u00a0 Representative Michael McCaul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, earlier this month Cruz told the\nSenate: \u201cThe government of Iran has been under a shroud of darkness for decades\nnow. Ayatollah\u00a0Khamenei\u00a0and the mullahs enforce brutal repression on\nthe people. And I will say to the Iranian people, to the men and women of Iran:\nAmerica is with you. America is with you and your struggle against cruel,\noppressive, torturing, murderous tyrants. Freedom matters. I believe we can one\nday again have a free Iran, not with the Ayatollah in power.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hesami wrote: \u201cThe current uprising aims to\nremove the entire regime, and it needs the US and the rest of the free world on\nits side. After years of appeasement and inaction in the face of ayatollahs\u2019\npersistent human rights abuses, suppression and foreign adventurism at the\nexpense of the Iranian people, it is the least the outside world can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
