United States and EU response to Iran protests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On behalf of the European Union, High Representative Josep Borrell Fontelles commented<\/a> on the situation in Iran regarding the protests that kicked off on Friday 15th<\/sup> November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the press release, Mr Borrell Fontelles said that the people of Iran have been expressing their economic grievances and exercising their \u201cfundamental right to assemble\u201d. He said that the Iranian regime\u2019s response<\/a> to this has been \u201cdisproportionate\u201d and that this has resulted in a large number of deaths and injured people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The High Representative said that the\nEuropean Union called on the authorities in Iran \u201cto ensure transparent and\ncredible investigations to clarify the number of deaths and arrested, and to\nprovide due process to all detainees\u201d. He also said that the EU expects all of\nthose perpetrating the violence to be \u201cheld accountable\u201d for their actions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With regards to the large number of arrests\nthat have been carried out, Mr Borrell Fontelles said that the EU expects \u201call\nnon-violent protestors currently held under arrest\u201d to be released immediately.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also spoke about the Iranian regime\u2019s internet\nshutdown, making it impossible for the people to \u00a0communicate with ease. The High Representative\nsaid that it \u201cprevented communication and the free flow of information for\nIranian citizens\u201d and that it was a \u201cclear violation of the freedom of speech\u201d.\nHe urged the Iranian regime to respect the fundamental rights of the people in\nterms of freedom of expression and assembly and reminded the authorities that\nthey have international obligations that should not be ignored. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He called on the UN Security Council to\ntake action with regards to the Iranian regime that is killing protesters and\nshutting their internet down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

United States and EU response to Iran protests<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

President Trump said that the media must\nget involved so that the rest of the world can see and hear what is really\nhappening there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explaining how a simple economic grievance\nhas turned into a major uprising, President Trump explained that the people of\nIran have been badly mistreated for quite some time. He highlighted that the\nregime has plundered the nation\u2019s wealth on terrorist and belligerent\nactivities and that the people are deeply unhappy with the leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump called on the members of\nthe UN Security Council to join the US in \u201cvital efforts to promote religious\nliberty around the globe\u201d, adding that the United States \u201cwill always stand\nwith the Iranian people in their righteous struggle for freedom\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump administration has been putting\nthe Iranian regime under \u201cmaximum pressure\u201d because of the threat that it poses\nto global peace and security. The president and key members of his\nadministration have been determined not to fall into the same appeasement\npolicies as previous administrations, even calling European countries out for\nfailing to address Iran\u2019s belligerence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking about the killing of protesters, the\nU.S. special representative for Iran Brian Hook said that the US has received\nmany videos of footage in Iran that are being checked and verified.
