Iran: Deplorable human rights conditions remain the norm in prison<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mehrdad Mohammadnejad<\/a>, an Iranian social media activist, has been transferred to another prison. The 23-year-old student was moved from Evin Prison to Fashafuyeh prison. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is currently serving a two-year sentence\nhanded to him by Tehran\u2019s Revolutionary Court because of his social media\npresence and was charged with \u201cspreading propaganda against the regime\u201d and\n\u201cinsulting officials and agents\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was arrested at home in October 2018. He\nwas badly beaten by a number of arresting agents who proceeded to confiscate\npersonal belongings including documents, books, phones and computer devices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fashafuyeh prison <\/a>conditions are very concerning. A former prisoner who has spent time in the prison has described the horrors that prisoners have been subject to there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an account of his time there, the\nprisoner said that he was sent to the quarantine section of the prison which\ncan only be described by him, and anyone else that has spent time there, as\n\u201chell\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Prisoners are then routinely sent to a part of\nthe prison named \u201cBrigade\u201d where the conditions are as equally horrid. Having\nspent several periods of quarantine over the course of several years, the\nprisoner concludes that conditions are deteriorating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prison was originally used as a\ndetention centre for prisoners with a drug addiction. The toilet is essentially\na hole in the ground beside a bedding area, separated only by a curtain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an area described as \u201cphysics\u201d, up to 32\nprisoners are crammed into a 3 meter by 3 metre space. There is no cooling or\nheating provided and water is cut off for much of the day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many prisoners are forced to sleep on the\nfloor because of a lack of beds. The former prisoner said that it is usually\ndrug addicts, newcomers and Afghans that occupy the floor space. Many sleep\nunder beds, meaning the experience is like resting in a coffin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fashafuyeh prison, like many prisons in\nIran, hold prisoners that are so ill that they should be in hospital. However,\nauthorities deny this basic right, increasing suffering for all of the\nprisoners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conditions are dirty, unhygienic and\ndownright dangerous. Violent prisoners are put in the same cells as political\nprisoners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former prisoner said that no attention\nhas been drawn to the conditions there and called for an urgent study to be\ncarried out in light of specific phenomena such as a massive increase in the\nnumber of highly educated prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other news, another activist, this time\nfor teachers\u2019 rights, Jafar Ebrahimi, was arrested at the end of last year.
