UN Special Rapporteur shocked by crackdown on protesters in Iran<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Nations\u00a0Special\nRapporteur\u00a0on the situation of\u00a0human rights in Iran Javaid Rehman has\nsaid<\/a>\nhe was \u201cshocked\u201d at the number of deaths, injuries, and torture of protesters\nin the November 2019 uprising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main Iranian opposition group, the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a>, reported that the regime killed at least 1,500 protesters, injured 4,000, and arrested 12,000 holding them under torture, during and after the nationwide uprising over the rise in fuel prices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regime even ordered the security forces\nto shoot unarmed citizens or into large crowds. Other human rights groups, like\nAmnesty International and Human Rights Monitor, as well as photos and videos\nfrom the scene, confirmed this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a report released on February\n19,\u00a0Rehman wrote: \u201cAccording to reports, detainees are being tortured or\nare suffering other forms of ill-treatment, sometimes to extract forced\nconfessions. There are also reports of denials of medical treatment, including\nfor injuries caused by the excessive use of force by the security forces, with\nsome other detainees being held incommunicado or being subjected to enforced\ndisappearance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that a member of the parliamentary\nForeign Affairs and Intelligence Committee\u00a0of the regime admitted in the\ndays after the protests that over 7,000 protesters had been arrested, held in\novercrowded cells and denied access to a lawyer. Rehman said they were\nbeing\u00a0tortured to extract forced confessions that would benefit the\nregime\u2019s narrative.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further said that he was \u201cconcerned\u201d\nover reports that the regime has been threatening the families of those killed\nby security forces against speaking to the media or holding vigils for their\nlost loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rehman\u2019s report, compiled under the UN General\nAssembly (UNGA)\u2019s Resolution 74\/167, will be presented to the UN Human Rights\nCouncil gathering on March 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
