Iran regime still trying to deny\ncoronavirus crisis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian MP Ahmad Amir Abadi Farahani\nrevealed on Monday that 50 people in Qom, where coronavirus was first detected\nin Iran, have died from the virus in the past two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, given that the Iranian regime\nhas been attempting to downplay the virus in a foolish attempt to make the\nregime seem stronger on the world stage, officials rushed out to deny this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ali\u00a0Rabiei, spokesperson for the\ngovernment of Hassan Rouhani, and deputy health\nminister\u00a0Iraj\u00a0Harirchi\u00a0held a joint press conference that day to\ndownplay the crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harirchi\u00a0said<\/a>:\n\u201cI deny the claim. According to the directives of the government and the\n[Supreme National] Security Council, no one else is qualified to declare news\nlike this. We have the information\u2026 If the number of deaths in Qom is half or\neven a quarter of this figure, I will resign.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then said that anyone who has\ninformation on the spread of the coronavirus should contact the regime\nprivately, which is a good way to ensure that it remains buried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harirchi\u00a0attempted to justify the high\ndeath rate in Iran from coronavirus, which he attributed to other countries\nhaving a policy of \u201cconcealment and denial\u201d, rather than Iran\u2019s continuation of\nflights to and from China and his claims that \u201cpeople do not need face masks\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rabiei\u00a0added:\u00a0\u201cAs the\nspokesperson of the government, I can tell you that many countries don\u2019t have\nthe transparency that we have. We acted in a very transparent way in this\nregard.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is especially rich hearing them claim\nthat other countries are hiding the effects of the coronavirus when the\nregime\u2019s officials admitted to not making statements about the virus in order\nto increase participation in last week\u2019s elections, which were due to be\nboycotted by the people anyway as a form of protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said:\u00a0\u201cA\ncollective campaign was undertaken against people\u2019s participation in the\nelection. On social media, a variety of entities used every factor possible\u2026\nSince a month, two months ago, they said this was not an election, not a real\nelection, the Guardian Council has done this or that\u2026 And this latest illness\n(COVID-19) became an excuse. In other words, they did not miss the slightest\nopportunity and did not even waste a few hours.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another reason for the regime\u2019s denial of\nthe crisis is that they feared another nationwide uprising, like those in\nNovember and January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
