British Lawmakers urge UK government to side with Iran\u2019s people<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cross-party politicians, lawyers, and\nwomen\u2019s rights activists discussed women\u2019s rights in Iran at a\u00a0conference\nin the\u00a0United Kingdom\u2019s\u00a0House of Commons\u00a0on Tuesday,\u00a0which\nwas organized by the\u00a0British Committee for Iran Freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirsty Brimelow QC, former president of the\nBar Human Rights Committee, chaired\u00a0the\u00a0conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her opening remarks, she said<\/a>:\n\u201cI welcome everybody to this early celebration of [International Women\u2019s Day]\nbut with an emphasis\u00a0on the situation of\u00a0women in Iran from various\nperspectives. I come at this from a legal perspective and my work on Iran is in\nrelation to the 1988 massacre and calling for an independent UN set-up inquiry\ninto these mass executions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the conference, panelists noted the alarming situation for women in Iran, which is deteriorating in the presidency of so-called\u00a0\u201cmoderate\u201d Hassan Rouhani, and the prominent role of women in both the recent protests and the historical freedom movement. They cited specifically the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), which advocates for regime change and has women occupying over 50% of the top roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baroness Boothroyd, the former Speaker of\nthe House of Commons, said:\u00a0\u201cThe UK\u00a0Government [must] recognize and\nback the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people, their organized\nResistance movement NCRI, and\nsupport\u00a0Maryam\u00a0Rajavi\u2019s\u00a010-point\u00a0democratic platform as the\nviable alternative to the current religious dictatorship. Our message should\nsimply be that we recognize that the problems in Iran have an Iranian solution\nand we proudly support it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sir David Amess MP\u00a0and Dr Matthew\nOfford MP\u00a0also called for the UK Government to support the popular\nuprisings, Rajavi, and the NCRI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rt Hon David Jones MP explained that\nthe Iranian people\u2019s boycott of the parliamentary election last Friday shows\nthat they despise the regime and support the Iranian Resistance forces who\ncalled for the boycott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said:\u00a0\u201c[This was] a sign that the\nmovement for democratic change in Iran is very much alive and deserve\ninternational recognition\u2026 the Iranian nation showed their desire for change\nand this is a reality that should be recognized by both the UK Government and\nthe\u00a0international\u00a0community.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Struan Stevenson, a former Member of the\nEuropean Parliament\u00a0and the\u00a0Coordinator of the Campaign for Iran\nChange\u00a0condemned\u00a0the EU for still supporting the Iran nuclear deal,\neven though the regime launched a violent crackdown on nationwide protests in\nNovember, killing over 1,500 people, wounding 5,000, and arresting 20,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary\u00a0Glindon\u00a0MP\u00a0applauded\u00a0the\u00a0NCRI\u00a0for\nworking to advance women\u2019s rights in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Baroness Verma,\u00a0former Parliamentary Under-Secretary of Department for International Development and Chairwomen of UN Women UK, said:\u00a0\u201cMaryam Rajavi<\/a> is an iconic figure for all of us and the Governments and ministers around the world should show the same courage and speak up for women\u2019s rights not only in Iran but around the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0panelists urged the\u00a0British Government to demand the UN Secretary-General immediately dispatch an international fact-finding mission to Iran to investigate the killing of protesters and visit the Iranian prisons to meet those arrested\u00a0during the protests and political prisoners.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They said that Britain should work with\nits\u00a0international allies to pressure the regime for the immediate release\nof protesters, political prisoners, and dual nationals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
