Donna Brazile, Chair of the Democratic National Committee (2016-2017), addressed at the Free Iran World Summit 2021 on July 10, 2021<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/iframe>\n\n\n\nIt is a delight to be with you today \u2013 or any day.<\/p>\n\n\n\nToday, I join you in solidarity \u2013 in this, the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/about-ncri\/alternative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a>. Let\u2019s give a solid round of applause for forty years of survival, thriving, and for the leadership of President-elect Mrs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/biography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryam Rajavi<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou know, this gathering is more than a Band of Brothers or a Stronghold of Sisters.\u00a0 It\u2019s a Fellowship of Family. Of a people who believe in human rights and freedom for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI am here not just in gratitude for sharing this occasion. I am here in humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The humility that comes from observing your remarkable courage and leadership.<\/li><li>Humility in watching you stand up to religious tyranny.<\/li><li>Humility for your firm resoluteness in seeking a secular state.<\/li><li>Humility for your advancement of human rights.<\/li><li>Humility in measuring your passion for freedom<\/li><li>Humility for your quiet embrace of humanity\u2019s equality.<\/li><li>Humility for your forthright defense of the rights of women and girls.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nAnd, yes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Humility for your persistence in seeking a nuclear-free Iran and a nuclear-free world.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nIndeed, you are an example for the world \u2013 including the United States \u2013 to emulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIndeed, you have so many friends here in America, and allow me to mention two great patriots who believed in your cause. They were outstanding public servants, a Democrat and a Republican who have supported <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/national-council-of-resistance-of-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NCRI<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nWe should mention these men because \u2013 despite their different upbringings, and the current difficulties to bridge political differences in working together \u2013 they represented the bipartisan spirit in theUnited States Congress and public life for your efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI knew late John Lewis, the Congressman from Atlanta, Georgia. We missed him,<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/political-figure\/john-lewis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">He was active in the Civil Rights Movement at the age of seventeen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHe was one of ten who spoke at the 1963 historic\u00a0\u00a0 March on Washington where the Reverend <a>Dr. Martin Luther King <\/a>Jr delivered his famous \u00a0\u201cI Have a Dream\u201d \u00a0speech.\u00a0 John Lewis was the last of the ten to leave us in 2020. We miss him and continue to mourn his passing.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI want to quote to you from an address John Lewis made at the U.S. Capitol Building to Iranian activists in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHis words are as relevant now as then because his struggle for Civil Rights and human rights was life-long, as it may be for those here present today.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHe said this to the gathered Iranian activists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cI come here to say to you, never-ever to give up, never-ever to give in, and never-ever to lose faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI got arrested 40 times, went to jail, beaten, left bloody and unconscious on the Freedom Rides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cI had a concussion of the brain during the march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama on March 7, 1965. But we didn\u2019t give up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cAnd people who support the people in Iran and those of you who live and reside here in the United States of America and around the world must, never-ever, give up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cContinue to press forward for your brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts, for your mothers and fathers and grandparents and great grandparents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cAs long as the people of Iran are denied their basic rights as human beings \u2013 people all over the world are denied their rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhen I saw the recent uprising in Iran, it reminded me of some of the non-violent struggle[s] that we had in America for the right to vote and for the right to participate in the democratic process. So, hang in there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nLet me also share the sentiments of the late Senator John McCain of Arizona \u2014 the 2008 Republican presidential nominee and Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAs many of you know, Senator John McCain suffered for five years at the hands of war enemies when he was a prisoner in Hanoi, North Vietnam.\u00a0 He was a young Lieutenant Commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHanoi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/john-mccain-refused-early-release-as-a-pow-in-vietnam-2018-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offered him an early release from prison, but John McCain refused<\/a> it.\u00a0 He refused because the release was based on the privilege of his being the son of a four-star Admiral. And indeed, Senator McCain stayed with his men until they were all freed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/meeting-of-senator-mccain-and-maryam-rajavi-senator-mccain-visits-pmoi-members-from-ashraf-in-tirana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">President-elect Rajavi, I know you knew John McCain personally too.\u00a0 You had a meeting with him in Albania in 2017<\/a>.\u00a0 Both of you caught some flak for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nProof that no good deed goes unpunished.<\/p>\n\n\n\nJohn McCain undertook that arduous trip in mid-April of 2017.\u00a0 He underwent brain surgery in early July, a mere two months later.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSenator McCain addressed the NCRI who were meeting in Albania.\u00a0 He said, in part,<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cYou have stood up and fought and sacrificed for freedom, for the right to live free, for the right to determine your own future, for the rights that are God-given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cI thank you for being an example, an example to the whole world, that those people who are willing to fight and sacrifice for freedom will achieve it, and you are an example to everyone in the world that is struggling for freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nSenator McCain added, \u201cSomeday, we all blood this, some day Iran will be free. Someday, we will all gather in that square.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nThis is a good place for me \u00a0to conclude my greeting.\u00a0 The struggle for self-determination, equality, and Human Rights is often hard, and always, always long. Never give up, never give up.<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou should never forget that when you are on the side of universal equality, that you are on the side of truth.\u00a0 As Dr. Martin Luther King taught us \u2014 the arc of the moral universe maybe long but it bends toward justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\nFreedom, and I know this, as a women born and raised in a segregated deep south hear in the United State of America. Freedom must be won by the people how yearn to live in a society where everyone, everyone including women and girls, everyone is treated with decency and respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI want you to know that the Spirit of Bipartisanship in the current 117th Congress of the United States will continue to support you. We will stand by you. The American people will always stand by those who believe in the universal truth of equality and justice for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI want you to know personally that this daughter of the south, This former chair of the Democratic National Party, This women who continue to believe in justice and equality that I am with you \u00a0\u2013 that millions of my fellow Americans are with you \u2013 that we will draw inspiration from your courage and your persistence and will stand with you and we will be with you that day we can gather in that square.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nThank you for your great work,<\/p>\n\n\n\nGod bless you.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Donna Brazile, Chair of the Democratic National Committee (2016-2017), addressed at the Free Iran World Summit 2021 on July 10, 2021.
