Secretary Deborah Lee James, Former US Secretary of the Air Force (2013-2017), addressed at the Free Iran World Summit 2021 on July 10, 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/iframe>\n\n\n\nTo the participants of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/freeiran-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Free Iran World Summit 2021<\/a>, to President-elect of the<a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/national-council-of-resistance-of-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> National Council of Resistance<\/a>, Mrs. <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/maryam-rajavi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, and to the millions more who are listening in Iran and around the world, including, and I might add, the mostly female led <a href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/t\/iranian-resistance-units\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resistance units<\/a>. I want to begin by thanking all of you for your dedication, your devotion and your commitment to the cause of a secular, democratic and non-nuclear Iran.\u00a0 I also want you to know that the government of the United States stands with you, the people of the United States stand with you, and\u2014 I, as a former Secretary of the US Air Force, a mother, a daughter and a sister\u2014 I also stand with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMy friends, I hope you are feeling tremendous pride at this point in your history, you certainly should feel that pride, for working courageously \u00a0and working together, you today form the backbone of a growing and powerful resistance to the corrupt regime in Tehran\u2014a resistance that\u2013 with your perseverance\u2013 will never ever be silenced. So I urge you to take heart and be encouraged, for you have accomplished an enormous amount in a very short period of time. Most recently, thanks to your collective efforts and to the leadership of Mrs. Rajavi, you sent a powerful message to Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/2020\/10\/24\/who-is-ali-khamenei-iranian-regime-supreme-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Khamenei <\/a>and his cronies.\u00a0 That message quite simply was:\u00a0 WE SHALL NOT TAKE PART IN YOUR SHAM ELECTION!<\/p>\n\n\n\nYour successful <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/2021\/06\/18\/live-report-widespread-boycott-of-the-mullahs-sham-presidential-election-by-the-iranian-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boycott of the June 18, 2021, election<\/a>, which of course came on the heels of four years of popular protest, these events showed the world, and they showed the regime in power that the Iranian people are fed up, fed up with the broken promises, the economic incompetence, the systemic corruption, the disrespect for human rights and the misogynistic treatment of the women of Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIf I may, let me reflect for just a moment on that last point, the misogynistic treatment of the women of Iran. How ironic that the leaders of Iran treat women as less than equals\u2014when it is this resistance movement, led by a woman and comprised of 50 percent women\u2014this is the very movement that will ultimately bring them down! And what a day of justice that would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMy friends, it is precisely due to your success that the regime in Iran is currently feeling increasingly threatened.\u00a0 That\u2019s in part why the June 18 vote was manipulated to elect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-ebrahim-raisi-a-mass-murderer-for-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ebrahim Raisi<\/a>\u2014a man who is more than willing to oppress the Iranian people in an even more harsh manner in the future. Because\u00a0 when you lose all popular support, when you ruin an otherwise productive economy, when you allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/coronavirus-in-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19<\/a> to ravage your people and refuse lifesaving vaccine from the West, the only tool left in your toolbox to maintain power and keep control of the country is to crack down even more severely on those who protest and who offer an alternative vision for the future.\u00a0 Unfortunately, I believe this is exactly what Ebrahim Raisi may do when he takes office in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\nEbrahim Raisi has the blood of many on his hands\u2014and the whole world knows it.\u00a0 As\u00a0 head of Iran\u2019s judiciary, and earlier in his career as a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1988<\/a> Death Commission, he is and was responsible for overseeing unspeakable actions, including the forced disappearance and execution of thousands and thousands of political prisoners\u2013 mostly members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/peoples-mojahedin-pmoi-mek-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MEK<\/a>\u2014 and the targeting of Iranian dissidents abroad.\u00a0 According to Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, this man should be investigated and tried for crimes against humanity, not installed as the next President of Iran.\u00a0 And I, for one, wholeheartedly agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\nNow although this state of affairs may sound bleak, but I say to you again\u2014take heart, take heart. The challenge certainly remains very very difficult; but your unity, sacrifice and persistence will surely deliver results.\u00a0 And I am certain that the United States wants to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSpecifically, there is overwhelming bipartisan support in the US House of Representatives for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-resolution\/118\/cosponsors?s=1&r=4&overview=closed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">H. Res. 118<\/a>\u2014a Resolution expressing support for the Iranian people\u2019s desire for a democratic, secular and non-nuclear Republic of Iran.\u00a0 H. Res. 118 also condemns Tehran\u2019s violations of human rights and state sponsored terrorism.\u00a0 As you know,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/viewpoints\/tomorrow-s-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Mrs. Rajavi\u2019s 10 point plan<\/a> was the model used to craft this resolution. So I want to thank her and the Iranian diaspora, including the Organization of Iranian-American Communities, in particular, \u00a0for educating many of us in the United States about what\u2019s really happening in today\u2019s Iran. It is so very important that you keep bringing to the attention of the American people and to the world the conditions the people of Iran are really facing today. Don\u2019t let up the pressure, keep on educating.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI now call on our Congress, including the US Senate, to finalize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-resistance\/house-resolution-on-iran-highlights-the-wests-commitment-on-human-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">H. Res 118<\/a> as soon as possible.\u00a0 In addition, I hope the Congress and other nations will support the Biden Administration\u2019s efforts to seek a \u201clonger and stronger\u201d agreement as a follow on to the reentry into the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and that any lifting of sanctions in the future would occur only after Tehran agrees and demonstrates that it has altered its behavior on terrorism, human rights, and regional destabilization.\u00a0 As a former Secretary of the US Air Force, I can tell you I am particularly knowledgeable about Iran\u2019s support for terror in Yemen, Lebanon, Gaza and against US forces in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere. These actions, this behavior, simply must come to an end!<\/p>\n\n\n\nMy friends, please allow me to sum up.\u00a0 YOU\u2014not them\u2014represent the future of Iran.\u00a0 YOU\u2014not them\u2014are committed to equality for all nationalities and genders.\u00a0 YOU\u2014not them\u2014believe in peaceful coexistence and respect for the United Nations charter.\u00a0 And if you continue to fight, to challenge, to speak out and to resist, well then, YOU\u2014not them\u2014will one day deliver the right of self-determination and freedom to the people of Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI know that change is very very hard, change takes time, change requires enormous sacrifice\u2014but I say once again: Keep the faith, keep up the resistance, keep telling the story\u2014and YOU\u2014not them\u2013 will ultimately prevail.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI thank you again for your participation in this very important conference, and most of all, I thank you for your commitment to a free Iran.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Secretary Deborah Lee James, Former US Secretary of the Air Force (2013-2017), addressed at the Free Iran World Summit 2021 on July 10, 2021.
