Amb. Mitchell Reiss, 27th President of Washington College, served as Director of Policy Planning at the United States Department of State from 2003 to 2005, addressed at the Free Iran World Summit 2021 on July 10, 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/iframe>\n\n\n\nMy name is Mitchell Reiss. I\u2019m a former American ambassador. It is my pleasure to be able to speak today to the Free Iran World Summit. That word \u2018free\u2019 in other words, like in freedom, democracy and human rights, unfortunately doesn\u2019t hold much meaning these days inside Iran. The latest presidential election was a sham, with less than 20%, perhaps as few as 10%, of the<a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/2021\/06\/18\/live-report-widespread-boycott-of-the-mullahs-sham-presidential-election-by-the-iranian-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> people of Iran actually bothering to vote<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\nWhy was that? Because so many of the candidates had been eliminated from the ballot by the regime unilaterally and arbitrarily. The low voter turnout was despite threats by Ayatollah <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/2020\/10\/24\/who-is-ali-khamenei-iranian-regime-supreme-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Khamenei <\/a>that voting was something that was essential, that if you didn\u2019t vote, it was a religious sin, and yet people still stayed away. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThe next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-ebrahim-raisi-a-mass-murderer-for-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">president <\/a>is clearly a puppet of the Mullahs. And you have to ask yourself, why was this one man selected? Why was he allowed to run for office, when so many others were denied that opportunity? And I think the answer is clear. It\u2019s because of his history of repression and terror in obedience to the religious authorities in their repression of the Iranian people for so many years, dating back to the late 1980s when he served as a member of the death commission that resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30,000 people being executed<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\nBoth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2021\/06\/iran-ebrahim-raisi-must-be-investigated-for-crimes-against-humanity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amnesty International<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/un-expert-calls-for-investigation-into-irans-1988-massacre-and-raisis-role\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations<\/a> have called for Special Investigations into the role of this death commission, and clearly any investigation must also examine his culpability for this crime against humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSo, there\u2019s no doubt that the regime in Iran once more is illegitimate. It doesn\u2019t enjoy the will of the people. In fact, the people have indicated that they don\u2019t support this regime. And it stands against a much better vision, a much more hopeful vision for Iran, one that is based on freedom and democracy and human rights and dignity, where people can assemble freely. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThey can read the books they want, they can post on social media as they wish, they can speak up. That\u2019s the vision that Madame Rajavi has established for a new Iran. It\u2019s very attractive. It is very appealing to millions of people across Iran and indeed across the world. But it is feared, terribly feared by the regime and the mullahs now control the levers of power in Tehran. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThe good news is time in history is on the side of <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/maryam-rajavi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Madame Rajavi <\/a>and freedom for the Iranian people. Hope must be kept alive, because that\u2019s what will eventually win the day. So, it\u2019s my pleasure, again, to speak to you today and to say that many people around the world, millions of people, stand with the Iranian people and their hopes and dreams for a better future. <\/p>\n\n\n\nAnd we\u2019re with you, and we encourage you, and we support the vision that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/biography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Madame Rajavi<\/a> has established for a new Iran.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Amb.
