Secretary Gary Locke, Former United States Secretary of Commerce (2009\u20132011), former ambassador to China (2011\u20132014) and the 21st governor of Washington (1997\u20132005), addressed at the Free Iran World Summit 2021 on July 10, 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/iframe>\n\n\n\nSeveral months before his tragic death nearly six decades ago, President John F. Kennedy said: \u201cThe wave of the future is not the conquest by a single dogmatic creed, but the liberation of the diverse energies of free nations and free people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nMy greetings to <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/maryam-rajavi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mrs. Maryam Rajavi,<\/a> President-elect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/national-council-of-resistance-of-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a>, and to the tens of thousands of people who have gathered virtually around the world to participate in this Iran Human Rights and Democracy Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI am truly humbled and honored to have been invited to speak to you today and to express my support as you continue your unrelenting fight.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe people and government of the United States of America stand in full solidarity with the people of Iran and fully support your desire to be a free people.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Iranian people are freedom-loving, brave, and resilient. You are waging a heroic uprising against the corruption and brutality of a terrorist regime. And I say with unwavering confidence that a brighter future awaits Iran thanks to your efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIn addition to being the world\u2019s leading state sponsor of terrorism, the evil regime in Tehran continues to suppress the most fundamental human rights of its own people.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Iranian people deserve a government that respects democratic norms, the rule of law, and places the needs of the Iranian people above funding its adventurism and terrorism abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIt is critical for the United States and other democracies around the world to stand with the Iranian people. This 2021 Free Iran Conference is critical to keeping alive your movement for freedom and democracy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nConferences and <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/freeiran-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Summits <\/a>like this are so critical. Because they remind the world that the evil regime does not speak for the people; that Iranians are committed to the ideals of democracy like free speech, public assembly, and fair elections; that human rights are universal rights sought by every people and every nation on earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSince the tyrants governing Iran came to power in 1979, hundreds of thousands of Iranians have suffered arrest and death for standing up to these cruel rulers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nI support House Resolution 118 of the current U.S. Congress with over 240 Democratic and Republican co-sponsors that condemns the Iranian regime\u2019s human rights abuses and calls on all democratic governments to unequivocally support the Iranian people\u2019s basic need for human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWomen in Iran suffer under a system of\u00a0discrimination and inequality. And this fact is manifest in the\u00a0constitution\u00a0and\u00a0penal code\u00a0of the Islamic Republic. And based on this system, the life of a woman literally is regarded as half as valuable as that of a man.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe combined effect is that half of the Iranian population lives with a legal vulnerability that would astonish observers throughout of the rest of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSimply put, women and girls in Iran are vulnerable to\u00a0violence and harassment, and this permeates every aspect of their lives.\u00a0As for treatment of ethnic minorities in Iran, they are among the most subjugated, dehumanized, and repressed groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIt is incumbent on the United Nations to pressure Tehran and hold the Iranian dictators accountable for the ongoing and heightened suppression of these vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAs you know Iran\u2019s ethnic minorities include Arabs, about 3 million of whom live near the Iraqi border in southwest Iran. Nearly 7 million Kurds living in northwest, in what is known as Iranian Kurdistan. The Azari, Iran\u2019s largest ethnic minority with the population of about 18 million who reside in several provinces including Tehran, Hamedan, and East Azerbaijan. And the Baluchis with an approximately population of 1.5 million mostly residing in southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan, near border with Pakistan. All the current socio-political and socio-economic situations are difficult for the wider Iranian population. A nation\u2019s ethnic minorities are suffering the worst social, economic and political deprivation, including deprivation of education and healthcare. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nAmerica has a proud tradition of supporting the rights of aggrieved people around the world.\u00a0 And I am proud that President Biden on his first trip abroad, renewed the importance of human rights.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe people of Iran can be confident that President Biden understands their persecution and will always support your efforts for a democratic Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhile the murderous government officials in Tehran are master propagandists, even they cannot whitewash the election in mid-June of Iran\u2019s new president, Ebrahim Raisi.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe election was a sham, even by the standards of Iran, where unelected clerics hold real power. Of the nearly 600 candidates who registered to run, all but seven were disqualified by the Guardian Council. The Council, a group of clerics and lawyers who vet candidates, essentially clear the field for the hardline cleric and judiciary chief with close ties to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/2020\/10\/24\/who-is-ali-khamenei-iranian-regime-supreme-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Khamenei<\/a>. Of course, it was a sham election that vast majority of the Iranian people boycotted the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\nRaisi\u2019s election means he is the first serving Iranian president to have been sanctioned by the U.S. government before entering office, for his involvement in human rights abuses \u2013 including the mass execution of political prisoners in 1988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sm824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The U.S. Treasury Department<\/a>\u00a0sanctioned him in 2019, citing reports that, under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-ebrahim-raisi-a-mass-murderer-for-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raisi<\/a>, the judiciary had condoned the execution of child offenders and arrested lawyers for defending political prisoners and human rights defenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe U.S. government has also noted his involvement in what it described as a \u201cbrutal\u201d crackdown on protesters following the 2009 election and the uprisings in 2016, 2017, and 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" style=\"width: undefinedpx;\" onerror=\"this.src='https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/wp-content\/themes\/hello-elementor\/images\/broken-image-placeholder.gif';this.srcset='https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/wp-content\/themes\/hello-elementor\/images\/broken-image-placeholder.gif';\">Dissidents have zeroed in on his role in the \u201cdeath commission\u201d that ordered the execution of thousands of political prisoners in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1988<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIranian political prisoners were asked to identify themselves. And those who responded \u201cmujahedeen\u201d were sent to their deaths, while others were questioned about their willingness to \u201cclear minefields for the army of the Islamic Republic,\u201d according to a 1990 Amnesty International report.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIt is estimated that some <a href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/t\/1988-massacre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30,000 Iranians were killed<\/a>.\u00a0The religious Fascists currently running the Iranian government must be held to account.\u00a0 The world community must speak with one voice: \u00a0that a president like Raisi is unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAs we look to a brighter future, I am very impressed with the 10-point plan that has been developed for a democratic Iran which also includes the Rule of Law, so important to a free society.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI got my start as a lawyer working as a criminal prosecutor in my hometown of Seattle, Washington. \u00a0My passion for the law has continued throughout my career.\u00a0 So, I am speaking from the heart when I say that much of the success of the United States can be traced to our strong rule of law that guarantees rights and protections to each individual.\u00a0 As you build a vibrant new democratic Iran, let me share the words of President Barack Obama about the beginnings of American democracy and its Constitution: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t perfect\u2026 But embedded in this document was a North Star that would guide future generations; a system of representative government \u2013 a democracy \u2013 through which we could better realize our highest ideals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nAnd President Abraham Lincoln, in the midst of the American\u00a0 Civil War, believed that American\u00a0democracy\u00a0meant equal rights and equality of opportunity for all its people. His thoughts from that turbulent time ring true to this day.\u00a0 Lincoln said: \u201cDemocracy\u00a0is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nI close with the words of another U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson, written some two hundred years ago: Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, wrote: \u201cWhen the people fear the government there is tyranny.\u00a0 When the government fears the people there is liberty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nIt has been an honor for me to join you today.\u00a0 Your cause is just and noble. \u00a0Oppressed people everywhere on earth are warmed by the flame from the lamp of liberty you hold with such courage and conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLong live <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/viewpoints\/tomorrow-s-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a free democratic Iran<\/a>!<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Secretary Gary Locke, Former United States Secretary of Commerce (2009\u20132011), former ambassador to China (2011\u20132014) and the 21st governor of Washington (1997\u20132005), addressed at the Free Iran World Summit 2021 on July 10, 2021.
