\n<\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Majid Saheb Jam, former political prisoner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-resistance\/irans-juvenile-executions-wont-stop-unless-retroactively-punished\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote <\/a>on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/about-ncri\/ncri\/alternative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI<\/a>) website, \u201cIt is estimated that the clerical regime is responsible for 70 percent of juvenile death sentences implemented throughout the world over the past 30 years. And despite the outcry from human rights organizations, Western governments, and Iranian activists and expatriates, there is no sign of the trend slowing down anytime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite many international campaigns on a yearly basis to stop Iranian juveniles from being executed, the regime continues to defy the uproar. On occasion, the pressure from the international community does help to force the regime to delay some juvenile executions, but these are often then carried out at later dates after the campaigns have ended, and once regime officials are certain that they will be unlikely to face any serious consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Stop Executions Of Child Offenders In Iran\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IiGgz_K1cRU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Majid Saheb Jam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-resistance\/irans-juvenile-executions-wont-stop-unless-retroactively-punished\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cThe practice of executing juvenile offenders ostensibly derives from the regime\u2019s fundamentalist interpretation of Islam, which allows for boys to be considered legally responsible at the age of 13, and girls at only nine. If such backward thinking were permitted to override international law, there would be no limit to what the regime could justify.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This situation isn\u2019t the only time that the regime has been known to violate international laws as there are regular cases of prisoners being convicted based on forced confessions. The regime blatantly undermines the laws and never faces consequences for their violations, which only further inflames their sense of impunity that they\u2019ve had for over three decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1988, mass executions<\/a> of political prisoners were carried out by the regime on a grand scale, including a number of juveniles, without facing any consequences, and this trend of feeling untouchable has continued ever since. Many of the detainees were supporters or members of the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (<a href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/about-iranian-opposition-pmoi-mek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PMOI\/MEK<\/a>), the regime\u2019s first and most serious opposition following the 1979 revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 1980s, groups of politically active minors were sentenced to long prison sentences for supposed crimes, which included distributing pamphlets on the MEK\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Saheb Jam wrote on the <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/national-council-of-resistance-of-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NCRI <\/a>website, \u201cTheir sentences were actually light in comparison to those handed down to people with higher-profile roles within the organization. But in the<a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/story-of-1988-massacre-in-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> summer of 1988<\/a>, all were treated the same, regardless of the nature of their so-called crimes or the length of their original sentences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, an audio recording made by the only high-ranking Iranian official to raise questions about the massacre, Hossein Ali Montazeri, was released. In the recording, Montazeri criticized and condemned his colleagues for participating in what he stated as, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/views\/news\/middle-east\/2016\/08\/19\/Montazeri-s-revelations-and-Iran-s-crime-against-humanity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the worst crime of the Islamic Republic<\/a>\u2019.\u00a0 He also confirmed that among the prisoners targeted were children, pregnant women and people who had already served their previous sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saheb Jam wrote, \u201cOf course, the <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/peoples-mojahedin-pmoi-mek-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PMOI<\/a> was aware of these details from the very beginning and had brought Western policymakers\u2019 attention to them as well. Still, the leaked recording reinforced the veracity of the PMOI\u2019s account, which includes a total estimated death toll of over 30,000.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The 1988 Massacre of Political Prisoners in Iran: Eyewitness Accounts, Majid Saheb Jam\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vbKXto8BCIg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The extent of the atrocities committed during the summer of 1988 shows that the massacre is clearly a crime against humanity, which in turn demands that investigations from international powers need to be carried out so that the perpetrators can finally be held accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Saheb Jam wrote, \u201cWhat is needed now is not action statements but real action.
