Iran Regime\u2019s Internet Censorship Plan and Its Consequences<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Recent reports in Iran\u2019s state-run media have laid out the plans for the Iranian regime\u2019s parliament to pass an \u2018internet protection\u2019 bill, that will greatly restrict <\/a>the country\u2019s internet and online freedom even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u2018Cyberspace Users Rights Protection and Regulation of Key Online Services\u2019 bill is aimed at restricting Iranians\u2019 access to international services, mostly social media sites. The bill will also allow the regime\u2019s security forces to gain more control over internet gateways in a bid to further intensify the suppression of dissent in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regime\u2019s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei<\/a>, spoke of his fear of social media in a speech he gave in July 2021. In his address, he stressed that his regime\u2019s \u2018significant task at hand\u2019 was to keep the threat of social media under control, and warned officials that they should pay close attention to it as a \u2018key issue\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stated, \u201cThe enemy has taken a combat formation through social media. The [regime] should also take its own position and prepare itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of the major nationwide protests<\/a> that took place in Iran in 2018 and 2019, that left the regime clinging onto survival, the National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a> (NCRI) said<\/a>, \u201cWhen the regime started its brutal crackdown, citizen journalists and the social network of the main Iranian opposition quickly spread the news of the regime\u2019s vicious actions and people\u2019s calls for democracy to the world community. In addition, protesters and the opposition used social media to organize further protests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
