In a statement<\/a>, 132 members of the European Parliament from all political groups condemned the brutal suppression of protests in Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The signatories include two of the parliament\u2019s spokespersons, seven presidents, and vice-presidents of political groups, 13 chairs and deputy-chairs of parliamentary commissions, and 14 members of the foreign affairs committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n<\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement was sent on October 5, 2022, to EU Council President Charles Michel and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement underlines that the nationwide uprising has spread to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mojahedineng\/status\/1576192706971193344?s=20&t=NoFp4Jb0xzk-kVtplo-MPQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">170 cities in 31 provinces<\/a>, and the Iranian regime has killed 400 people and arrested 20,000 protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MEPs emphasized that the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/t\/iranian-resistance-units\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Resistance Units<\/a> and organized opposition have a vital role in organizing and initiating these protests by accepting high risks and have created a resistance front against repression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement emphasizes the direct role and responsibility of the regime\u2019s supreme leader <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/articles\/2020\/10\/who-is-ali-khamenei-iranian-regime-supreme-leader\/19254\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ali Khamenei<\/a> and its president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-ebrahim-raisi-a-mass-murderer-for-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ebrahim Rais<\/a>i, including the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/1988-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in 1988<\/a>, 90% of whom were members and supporters of the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/about-iranian-opposition-pmoi-mek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK)<\/a> organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MEPs urged the European governments to recognize the will of the Iranian people and their organized resistance to establish a free, democratic Iran based on the separation of religion and state, strongly condemn the massacre in Iran, and refer to the regime\u2019s crimes case to the Security Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also urged the European countries to bring the criminals to justice and impose punitive measures against those responsible for the recent deadly repression, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-call-on-international-community-to-prosecute-ebrahim-raisi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raisi <\/a>and make relations with the regime conditional on the immediate stop of executions, repression, and the release of those arrested. They called on their governments to help the Iranian people to have free and unhindered access to the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full text of the statement is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/European-Parliament-FOFI.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-218653\" onerror=\"this.src='https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/wp-content\/themes\/hello-elementor\/images\/broken-image-placeholder.gif';this.srcset='https:\/\/iranfreedom.org\/en\/wp-content\/themes\/hello-elementor\/images\/broken-image-placeholder.gif';\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Support the Iranian people\u2019s uprising<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Condemn brutal suppression of protestors<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">4 October 2022\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since mid-September, protests and anti-regime uprisings have spread all over Iran. The protests by women and youth have so far expanded to more than 170 cities in all 31 provinces. Demonstrations are taking place in 45 major universities. The protesters, chanting the rallying cry of \u201cDeath to Khamenei,\u201d seek to overthrow the unelected religious dictatorship. The repressive forces fire tear gas and live ammunition at the protesters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new round of uprisings was sparked when Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman from Iran\u2019s Kurdistan province, was arrested in Tehran under the pretext of mal-veiling and was murdered as a result of police beatings. As of October 1, at least 400 demonstrators have been killed and countless others have been injured, and over 20,000 arrested. By disrupting and disconnecting the Internet in large parts of Iran, the regime is trying to prevent the transmission and dissemination of news and images of protests, the true dimensions of the uprising, and finally revelations regarding the scope of its massacre and suppression. The international community must guarantee free access to the Internet for the people of Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resistance Units and the organized opposition are taking serious risks to play a vital role in organizing and sustaining these protests while putting up a resistance front against repression.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last 40 years, executions and repression have been carried out by Iran\u2019s current leaders, such as All Khamenei and the regime\u2019s current President, Ebrahim Raisi. Amnesty International has repeatedly called for the prosecution of Raisi for his role in the massacre of political prisoners in 1988. In that year, 30,000 political prisoners, 90% of whom were from the PMOI\/MEK, were executed in accordance with Khomeini\u2019s fatwa. During the uprising of the Iranian people in November 2019, more than 1500 demonstrators were killed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prospect of change in Iran has never been this accessible. It is time to recognize the right of the Iranian people to defend themselves and overthrow this regime and establish a free and democratic Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In view of the above facts, we, the undersigned, issue the following call to the European Union, HR\/VP, United Nations and its member states:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1-\u00a0Strongly condemn the killing of demonstrators in Iran and take urgent measures to stop this repression. The dossier of this regime\u2019s crimes must be referred to the United Nations Security Council and those responsible for committing such crimes must be brought to justice;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2-\u00a0Make any relations with Iran contingent upon the halt of executions, domestic repression, and the crackdown on protests and dissent and a release of all those arrested during the recent uprising;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3-\u00a0Help the Iranian people have free and unhindered access to the internet in response to the regime\u2019s internet shutdown and blocking of social media platforms;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4-\u00a0Impose punitive measures on those responsible for the latest deadly crackdown and regime leaders like Raisi in line with EU\u2019s Magnitsky-style laws as required by the European Parliament;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5-\u00a0Recognize the Iranian people\u2019s democratic aspirations, their organized Resistance movement, and their
