Turki Al Faisal: Our support is for Iranian people<\/p>\n

Al Arabiya English\u00a0 Prince Turki al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia\u2019s former intelligence chief, expressed his support for the Iranian people in calling for the downfall of Iran\u2019s theocratic regime at the Paris-based rally \u201cFree Iran\u201d on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Who is Turki and why does he matter?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Turki<\/strong>\u00a0serves as chairman of the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies and has previously served as ambassador to the United States. He also served as the\u00a0Director of the General Intelligence<\/strong>. He is the eighth and youngest son of King Faisal, who ruled Saudi Arabia from 1964 to 1975.<\/p>\n

Turki Al Faisal_ Our support is for Iranian people, not regime \u2013 Al Arabiya English<\/a><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Al Saud family<\/strong>\u00a0has thus far refrained from engaging the Iranian people, which is perhaps the most ardent Iranian-borne opponent of the theocracy that currently rules Iran. In the years leading up to and immediately following the\u00a0Iranian Revolution<\/strong>, the Iranian people was one of the largest political forces within Iran.<\/p>\n

Al Faisal reflected on the history of friendship and cooperation between Arabs<\/a> and the Iranian people\u00a0 as he spoke before a gathering of more than 100,000 Iranian opposition activists. He also underlined the religious, cultural and language aspects they share even now.<\/p>\n

Al Faisal voiced his support for the Iranian people in efforts to remove what he called the the \u201clegitimate struggle against Khomeini\u2019s regime\u201d, referring to the founder of the Islamic Republic, saying the \u201csuffering and humiliation of the Iranian people\u201d should come to an end.<\/p>\n

The prince also asserte\/<\/a> that the Muslim world stands to support the Iranian people\u2019s<\/a> cause both \u2018in heart and soul\u2019.<\/p>\n

The Saudi prince and diplomat<\/a>, who was among the event\u2019s main speakers, said he held the current regime responsible for ongoing tensions between Iranian people and Arab states, as a result of intervening in their own internal affairs.<\/p>\n

And as he recalled the history of various Iranian regimes, he noted the reasons why Iran had been isolated.<\/p>\n

He criticized Khomeini\u2019s \u201cisolationist and interventionist foreign policy,\u201d saying it had deepened the gap among the Islamic world.<\/p>\n

His speech received an enthusiastic response from a chanting crowd.<\/p>\n
