Maryam Rajavi and Iranian gather in Paris, slam U.S.\u2019 nukes deal<\/p>\n

PARIS | In the biggest gathering of its kind, thousands of Iranian dissidents \u2014 and no shortage of former high-level American officials from both sides of the aisle \u2014 will converge here Saturday for a giant rally calling for the downfall of\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u2019s theocratic government.\u00a0Organizers say former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is coming, along with former Govs. Howard Dean, Bill Richardson and Tom Ridge, along with former FBI Director Louis Freeh, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and a host of others.<\/p>\n

The event\u2019s main organizer is the National Council of Resistance of\u00a0Iran<\/a>, whose persistence and tactics have given it a double-edged reputation even among some of\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u2019s Western critics. NCRI leader\u00a0Maryam Rajavi<\/a>is slated to headline Saturday\u2019s rally with a demand that Washington abandon the year-old Iranian nuclear accord and take a far more aggressive posture toward Tehran.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s rally participants \u201crepresent the voice of millions of Iranians who are being oppressed in their country and who seek regime change and the establishment of a democratic, pluralist and non-nuclear government based on the separation of religion and state,\u201d\u00a0Mrs. Rajavi<\/a>\u00a0said in an email interview with The Washington Times this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir expectation of the next U.S. president, as with other Western leaders, is to abandon the policy of appeasement, which emboldens the Tehran regime to intensify the suppression of the Iranian people while continuing the policy of exporting terrorism to the region,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

MMaryam Rajavirs. <\/a>\u00a0has explicitly called for \u201cregime change\u201d in Tehran, and this year she\u2019ll do it to cheers from thousands of NCRI members and supporters. Last June, hundreds of buses ferried in activists from across France and beyond to fill a fairground and convention center in the town of Villepinte, just north of Paris.<\/p>\n

Organizers describe the NCRI as a dissident umbrella organization that includes more than 300 Iranian opposition groups located in some 24 nations, including the United States.<\/p>\n

But while Maryam Rajavi\u00a0anti-regime proclamations have long appealed to neoconservative Republicans, as well as to some hawkish Democrats, the NCRI is also known for its turbulent history in Washington.<\/p>\n

No one disputes the NCRI\u2019s influence \u2014 some even describe it as the largest Iranian dissident group in the world. But its most controversial faction is the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), which for years was listed by the European Union and the U.S. as a terrorist organization.<\/p>\n

The MEK, which engaged in a power struggle against leaders of\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u2019s 1979 Islamic Revolution, was known to have carried out terrorist attacks against Iranian government targets during the 1980s. Although U.S. officials say it also participated in attacks on Americans, MEK representatives have long argued that the terrorist listing was never driven by legitimate U.S. national security concerns.<\/p>\n

Maryam Rajavi.<\/a>\u00a0insisted the broad \u201cresistance\u201d movement was growing inside\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u00a0in recent years even as the government has cracked down on the group.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the intensification of the suppression over the past couple of years, we have witnessed a growing interest among the Iranian people, especially women and youth, towards the Iranian Resistance,\u201d she said. \u201cThe opposition to the regime is expanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also pushed back against characterizations of the NCRI and its various affiliate organizations as acting like a cult. \u201cThe source of these allegations is the Iranian regime\u2019s intelligence ministry,\u201d she said. \u201cThe regime\u2019s lobbies in the West paint the Iranian opposition as a \u2018cult\u2019 or \u2018terrorist group\u2019 lacking popular support. By doing so, they want to perpetuate the notion that there is no other alternative for\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u00a0except dealing with the ruling religious dictatorship.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NCRI leader slammed last year\u2019s nuclear deal with\u00a0Iran<\/a>, arguing that the state political freedom and human rights have only worsened since the inking of the deal last July.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe pace of executions has intensified.
