Iranian Regime Accused of Targeting Political Prisoners with Death Sentences<\/h3>\n

The British Committee for Iran Freedom (BCFIF<\/a>) has raised alarm over Iran\u2019s latest crackdown on political dissidents. In a statement<\/a> released on 18 July 2025, the Committee urged the UK Government to strongly condemn Iran\u2019s planned executions of political prisoners.<\/p>\n

According to the Committee, Iran has sentenced three political prisoners\u2014Farshad Etemadi-Far, Masoud Jamei, and Alireza Mardasi (Hamidavi)\u2014to two death sentences each. They are accused of vague and politically motivated charges like \u201cenmity against God,\u201d<\/em> \u201ccollusion against national security,\u201d<\/em> and \u201cmembership in the PMOI (MEK)<\/a>,\u201d<\/em> Iran\u2019s main opposition group.<\/p>\n

Fears of a New Mass Execution Campaign<\/h3>\n

The Committee believes these rulings are part of a wider effort by the regime to silence opposition. They warn that Iran may be planning another mass killing of political prisoners, similar to the 1988 massacre, when over 30,000 prisoners were executed.<\/p>\n

On 16 July, IRGC agents attempted to transfer Saeed Masouri<\/a>, one of Iran\u2019s longest-held political prisoners, to an unknown location. Masouri, jailed for 25 years, wrote a public letter titled \u201cA Crime is in Progress.\u201d<\/em> In it, he warns that another massacre may soon begin in Iran\u2019s prisons.<\/p>\n
