The \u201cNo to Execution Tuesdays<\/a>\u201d campaign has entered its 102nd consecutive week<\/a> at the start of 2026, with prisoners in 55 prisons across Iran staging a coordinated hunger strike to protest the Islamic Republic\u2019s relentless use of the death penalty.<\/p>\n

According to the campaign\u2019s latest statement, Iranian authorities executed more than 2,200 people in 2025 alone, including at least 19 political and ideological prisoners. The campaign warns that executions continue at an alarming pace, placing the lives of dozens of prisoners\u2014particularly political detainees\u2014in imminent danger.<\/p>\n

Escalating Threats Against Political Prisoners<\/h3>\n

This week\u2019s protests come amid growing concern over the death sentence issued against political prisoner Seyyed Mohammad Mousavi, currently held in Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz. Mousavi, a native of Shadegan, is the latest addition to a growing list of political prisoners facing execution, underscoring the regime\u2019s use of capital punishment as a tool of political repression.<\/p>\n

The campaign reported that since the beginning of the Persian month of Dey (December 21), Iranian authorities have executed at least 167 people, including one woman, highlighting a sharp escalation in state violence in recent weeks.<\/p>\n

Hunger Strikes in Solidarity With Nationwide Protests<\/h3>\n

Campaign participants stated that this week\u2019s hunger strike coincides with ongoing nationwide protests and strikes across Iran, now continuing for a tenth consecutive day. Protesters have taken to the streets to oppose worsening economic conditions, systemic corruption, and decades of political repression.<\/p>\n

Members of the \u201cNo to Execution Tuesdays\u201d campaign emphasized that these struggles share a common goal: ending authoritarian rule and achieving freedom, equality, and democracy. They stressed that arrests, violence, torture, and forced confessions will not silence public resistance or halt the fight against executions.<\/p>\n

55 Prisons Join Week 102 of the Campaign<\/h3>\n

On Tuesday, January 6, 2026 (16 Dey 1404), prisoners in 55 facilities\u2014including Evin Prison, Qezel Hesar, Greater Tehran Penitentiary, Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, and numerous prisons across Khuzestan, Kurdistan, Sistan and Baluchestan, and other provinces\u2014participated in hunger strikes as part of the 102nd week of the campaign.<\/p>\n
