\"32 — 32 countries urge Iran to immediately halt executions of protesters and release people arbitrarily detained.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Twenty-six European Union member states, together with Kaja Kallas, the EU\u2019s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on Wednesday, August 12, issued a joint statement strongly condemning the continued issuance and implementation of death sentences against protesters in Iran.<\/p>\n
The signatories stressed that the use of capital punishment to \u201csilence dissent, intimidate communities, and punish individuals exercising their human rights\u201d can never be justified.<\/p>\n
The statement also emphasized that the people of Iran must be free to exercise their right to freedom of expression and to participate in peaceful assemblies without fear.<\/p>\n
French Foreign Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot said that six additional countries had joined the statement after its initial publication, bringing the total number of signatories to 32. The French Foreign Ministry has published the full text of the joint statement<\/a> on its website.<\/p>\n
The countries that signed the statement are France, Canada, Albania, Germany, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden, together with the European Union\u2019s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n
The international condemnation comes as the issuance and implementation of death sentences against protesters in Iran continues to draw widespread criticism, with human rights advocates accusing the Iranian authorities of using the death penalty as a tool to suppress dissent and silence opposition.<\/p>\n
In their joint statement, the countries also called on Iran to **immediately end the use of the death penalty and release individuals who have been arbitrarily detained<\/strong>.<\/p>\n**
**Reaction from the Iranian Resistance<\/h3>\n**In response to this development, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI<\/a>), welcomed the joint stance of the European Union and 32 nations\u2014including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Norway, and Albania\u2014which unequivocally condemned the execution of protesters and the use of the death penalty in Iran.<\/p>\n
She stated that the application of capital punishment to intimidate citizens and suppress dissent is utterly unjustifiable and demanded an immediate end to this practice.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile this coordinated stance comes late, it remains a vital step forward that must now be reinforced through concrete, decisive action,\u201d Mrs. Rajavi<\/a> said. \u201cIran\u2019s egregious human rights record must be referred to the United Nations Security Council, the regime\u2019s leaders must be held accountable through international judicial mechanisms or universal jurisdiction, and the courageous struggle of the Iranian people and youth against religious fascism must be formally recognized by the global community.\u201d<\/p>\n
