Steelworkers\u2019 protest in the city of Ahvaz<\/a> entered its 38th consecutive day On Monday, Dec. 17. On that day, the protest faced a new round of crackdown by the Iran regime\u2019s security forces. Mass arrests took place overnight<\/a>. The raids targeted the homes of Iranian National Steel Industries Group (INSIG) workers. They were carried out in absence of warrants, as in cases of politically motivated arrests. Dozens of workers were arrested and many spent nights out of their homes to avoid arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again,\nin the early hours of Tuesday, security forces raided several homes and\narrested 10 more. According to the observers, at least 41 individuals were\narrested at their homes or in the streets for participating in the steelworkers\u2019\nprotest, demanding their legitimate rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nsuppressive security forces transferred the arrested workers to Ahvaz\u2019s Sheyban\nPrison. The General Assembly of the Ahvaz Steel Workers announced that they\nwould not engage in any negotiations with the regime\u2019s authorities until all\nthe workers were released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These arrests have been the largest of their kind since the steelworkers\u2019 protest began. The workers demanded their overdue wages, improvement of work conditions and their basic right for forming workers councils. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the cruel attacks, the regime could not quell the protest. On the contrary, the protest continued the next day and workers chanted: \u201cImprisoned workers must be freed.\u201d The demonstration took place in spite of the heavy presence of the security forces attempting to create an atmosphere of intimidation. The workers released a statement in which they declared, \u201cThe crime of these workers was crying out for justice, for condemning the mafia and not giving in to disgrace.\u201d The workers use \u201cMafia\u201d as a metaphor to describe the corrupted government officials who have pushed the factory toward bankruptcy, and the lives of the workers into misery. \u201cWe warn you to immediately release our detained colleagues and end this injustice,\u201d the workers stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This latest wave of arrests provoked tremendous support for the detained steelworkers<\/a>\nand their demands. Other workers, students<\/a> and teachers across\nIran as well as international unions lend their support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workers from\ndifferent parts of Iran, including Tehran Bus Drivers Syndicate and truck\ndrivers in various parts of Iran, expressed their solidarity with Ahvaz steelworkers\u2019\nprotest and called for the immediate release of the detainees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demonstrators\nacross Iran expressed their support for the jailed\nworkers and called for their freedom. Hundreds of pensioners protesting outside\nthe regime\u2019s parliament in Tehran voiced their support for the steelworkers\u2019\nprotest in Ahvaz on Tuesday morning. The protesters chanted: \u201cFrom Ahvaz to\nTehran, workers are in jails\u201d, \u201cFree the steelworkers\u201d, \u201cImprisoned workers\nmust be freed\u201d, \u201cImprisoned teachers must be freed\u201d, \u201cGovernment engages in\ncrimes, parliament supports it\u201d, \u201cThe enemy is here, they lie to us that it\u2019s\nAmerica\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On\nWednesday, during their rallies in the cities of Isfahan and Yazd, the retired\neducators chanted slogans demanding freedom of the detained steelworkers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nIndustrial Workers of the World (IWW), a global union, published a statement\nin support of the striking workers in Iran<\/a>, which reads in part, \u201cWe\nfurther redouble our call to all labor organizations to condemn trampling of\nthe workers\u2019 basic rights and to demand the ruling dictatorship in Iran release\nall detained workers, to respect the basic rights of workers and to adhere to\nall international labor laws\u2026We demand the quick and unconditional release of\nall workers and truck drivers who were arrested during strikes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement<\/a>\nissued on Dec. 18, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) condemned\nthe callous arrests of worker protesters and called on workers, students and\nyouths to rise in their support and protest their arrests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Maryam\nRajavi, the president-elect of the Iranian resistance tweeted<\/a>,\n\u201cI call on the nation, all workers, youths and students, to back the striking\nworkers and protest against their arrests. The secret to victory is stepping up\nand expanding your uprisings with the resistance units who lead the way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports\nindicate that about 80 percent of the country\u2019s entire population has been\nconsigned to poverty as a result of 40 years of governmental mismanagement and\ncorruption.
