April 8, 2025 — On this day, political and ideological prisoners in 38 prisons across Iran once again observed a hunger strike as part of the ongoing campaign “No to Executions Tuesdays.” This marks the 63rd consecutive week of the nationwide protest against the death penalty in Iran.
This week’s action comes as Amnesty International reported that 64% of all recorded executions worldwide in 2024 were carried out by the Iranian regime, highlighting the country’s status as the global leader in state executions.
In its weekly statement, the campaign wrote:
“Following the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, a resolution was passed condemning Iran’s widespread human rights abuses. The Council also renewed the mandates of the UN Special Rapporteur and the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for another year.”
The European Parliament also issued a resolution this week condemning Iran’s execution spree and the upholding of death sentences for Mehdi Hassani and Behrouz Ehsani. The resolution reiterated its call for the release of all political and ideological prisoners and demanded the designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization by the European Union.
Meanwhile, inside Iran, the repression has intensified. The Nowruz holiday pause in executions has ended. Recently, several prisoners have been transferred to quarantine or secure wards ahead of imminent executions — including at least 10 inmates moved on Monday to the execution wing of Ghezel Hesar Prison.
Among the concerning developments:
-
The Supreme Court has again rejected the retrial request of Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner, increasing the likelihood of her execution.
-
Karim Khojasteh, held in Lakan Prison, Rasht, has been charged with “Baghi” (armed rebellion), a capital offense that may result in a death sentence.
The “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign continues to call on the international community to condition all relations with the Islamic Republic on the total abolition of the death penalty, while condemning the regime’s ongoing use of executions — both political and non-political — as a tool of repression.
