Global Experts Urge UN to Halt Iran’s Execution of Political Prisoners

Over 300 Global Figures and NGOs Urge UN Action to Stop Executions of Political Prisoners in Iran
In a powerful call to action, more than 300 international experts, including United Nations officials, Nobel laureates, former ambassadors, judges, and human rights organizations, have issued an urgent appeal to the UN to intervene and halt the imminent executions of political prisoners in Iran. The statement, published on May 2, 2025, by the Iran 1988 website (iran1988.org), condemns the Iranian regime’s escalating campaign of politically motivated killings as a deliberate tactic to suppress dissent and thwart democratic aspirations.

The appeal highlights the cases of Behrouz Ehsani, 69, and Mehdi Hassani, 48, whose death sentences were upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court. Charged with “membership in the PMOI/MEK,” “propaganda,” and other vague offenses labeled as “enmity against God” and “corruption on earth,” the two men endured a five-minute trial on August 10, 2024, devoid of legal counsel, marred by torture, and lacking any semblance of justice. Allegations of brutal treatment, including beatings, prolonged solitary confinement, and threats against their families, were dismissed by authorities. The statement demands an immediate halt to their executions, warning that silence from the international community is untenable.

Dozens of political prisoners, including Abolhassan Montazer, Akbar Daneshvarkar, Babak Alipour, Mohammad Taghavi Sangdehi, Pouya Ghobadi, Vahid Bani Amerian, Pakhshan Azizi, Verisheh Moradi, and Sharifeh Mohammadi, face imminent execution following grossly unfair trials. Many have been transferred to Qezel Hesar Prison, a notorious execution site. Since President Masoud Pezeshkian took office in August 2024, over 1,000 executions have been carried out, disproportionately targeting women, juveniles, ethnic minorities, and dissidents. The experts frame this as a calculated effort to prevent uprisings and crush demands for change.

The statement traces Iran’s crackdown to a “culture of impunity,” rooted in the regime’s failure to account for past atrocities, including the 1981-82 mass killings and the 1988 massacre, which a July 2024 UN report classified as crimes against humanity and genocide. Perpetrators of these crimes, rather than facing justice, have risen to senior positions in Iran’s government and judiciary. The appeal also praises the courage of prisoners participating in weekly “No to Execution Tuesdays” hunger strikes across 40 Iranian prisons since January 2024, a testament to their defiance against systemic brutality.

Citing violations of international human rights law, including the right to a fair trial and freedom from torture, the coalition welcomes recent actions, such as the European Parliament’s April 3, 2025, resolution condemning the death sentences of Ehsani and Hassani, and a February 6, 2025, letter from the UN Special Rapporteur to Iranian authorities. The experts urge the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, relevant UN Special Procedures, the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, and democratic governments to act swiftly to halt these executions. They also call for sanctions on Iranian officials responsible for human rights abuses and for making the abolition of the death penalty and the release of political prisoners a prerequisite for improved diplomatic relations with Iran.

Signed by luminaries such as Judge Sang-Hyun Song, former President of the International Criminal Court, Nobel Peace Prize laureates Oleksandra Matviichuk and Jody Williams, and organizations like Iran Human Rights Monitor and the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, the appeal underscores a global consensus on the urgency of the crisis. The full statement, including the list of signatories, is available on the Iran 1988 website, serving as a clarion call for justice and accountability.
