Prisoners in 59 Iranian Prisons Stage Hunger Strike in the 130th Week of the Campaign
The “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign has marked its 130th consecutive week by condemning the growing number of executions in Iran and honoring the memory of all executed prisoners, especially those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for freedom and against dictatorship.
Iran Human Rights Monitor — Tuesday, July 21, 2026 — Political prisoners participating in the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign in 59 prisons across Iran launched another hunger strike on Tuesday, July 21, to once again protest the continued issuance and implementation of death sentences.
Despite ongoing security pressures, threats, communication restrictions, and punitive measures, the campaign has continued for more than two years, becoming one of the most widespread, persistent, and influential protest movements inside Iran’s prisons. Each week, more prisoners join the campaign.
Qezelhesar Prison: Hunger Strike by 1,500 Death-Row Prisoners Enters Its Eighth Day
The “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign expressed its support for the hunger strike by prisoners in Unit 2 of Qezelhesar Prison, where more than 1,500 inmates sentenced to death have been protesting for over a week against executions and demanding the cancellation of their death sentences.
The prisoners in this unit are all facing execution, with many convicted in drug-related cases. The campaign stated that drug trafficking and production networks are linked to state officials and commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, while impoverished individuals who have become trapped in addiction due to economic hardship are being sent to the gallows on a daily basis to conceal the authorities’ role in this crisis.
The prisoners emphasized their opposition to the death penalty and called for an immediate halt to executions and an end to what they described as an ongoing cycle of state-sanctioned killing.
Executions of Political Prisoners Raise Concerns Over the Fate of Others
In its statement marking the 130th week, the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign condemned recent executions and paid tribute to prisoners who have lost their lives.
The campaign stated that the authorities executed four political prisoners last week:
- Aref Khoshkar in Qezelhesar Prison
- Mohammad Amini Dehaghani
- Erfan Esfandiyari
- Gol Mohammad Mohammadi in Isfahan Prison
The campaign described these executions as “medieval” and stated that, like many other political prisoners sentenced to death, these individuals were tried and executed following unfair judicial proceedings.
The statement also expressed deep concern over the fate of 10 other prisoners connected to the Ali Khani Square case.
Nishapur Prison Joins “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign
With the participation of prisoners from Nishapur Prison, the number of prisons involved in the campaign has reached 59.
The campaign stated:
“In protest against inhumane executions, more than 1,500 prisoners in Unit 2 of Qezelhesar Prison have been on strike and protesting for more than a week, demanding the cancellation of death sentences.”
According to verified statistics cited by the campaign, at least 280 prisoners have been executed in Iran since the beginning of 1405 (Iranian calendar year).
The campaign added that prisoners in Qezelhesar Prison and participants of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” movement have now stood against the death penalty for 130 consecutive weeks.
