Joint Statement of 6 Australian Human Rights Organizations and Associations

The Australian NGOs call on the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Labor Organization to refer the execution of Navid Afkari, Iranian worker and wrestler to the International Criminal Court, and the UN Security Council.

Six Australian human rights organizations condemned Navid Afkari‘s execution and recognized him as a hero and a worker. They reminded that on August 5, 2020, the Iranian regime executed Mostafa Salehi, another worker who had participated in the 2018 nationwide protests in Iran.

In addition, five UN human rights experts, including Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, condemned Navid Afkari execution.

In the part of the statement, Australian NGOs also stressed that the international community never investigated the killing of more than 30,000 Iranian political prisoners in the summer of 1988, and the perpetrators were never brought to justice. Also, the same people who committed this crime are still in power in Iran and are harassing their protesters.

They continued, “We are deeply concerned about the increasing number of prisoners’ executions and call for the release of political prisoners in Iran and the sending of an international fact-finding mission to visit Iranian prisons.”

At the end of this statement, they emphasized that, “As leaders of non-governmental organizations, we demand a decisive response before executing more protesters in Iran.”
